Hurricane Milty tunes
October 08, 2024 12:25PM
I've got the joint all buttoned up, now what to play? Hmm...

First off, THE MOVE .
The '89 A&M Best of CD, truly is. "Lightning Never Strikes Twice" you bet!
And "Curly" from 1969, reminds me exactly why I (never been a fan) can't stand Bowie's plagiarizing Roy Wood's vocal style for even one second.
I just adore The Move.

Next up, THE WHO - Sell Out
THE album that every other album pales in comparison.
It's only fitting though, that a record released fifty seven years ago (the platters original etched grooves long since worn out) could possibly contain the creative explosions found deep within. Even today, the far reaching ideas, the cornucopia of sounds and musical/art concepts still splatter the rooms of my house, my mind, and my life.

SMALL FACES - There are but Four Small Faces
Was there other R&B/Psychedelic bands around in 1967?
I dunno, but if there was, they didn't matter as much as this band did, then or now.

KINKS - Something Else
And speaking of the Summer of Love, this record takes this listener on a fascinating journey from a youths outdoor school yard, inside residents' laundry room, smoking lounge, a war officers medal room, eavesdrops on an unemployed fellow with a nagging wife and mother in-law and that's just side one!
Side two : The energy love and the sun provide us human people, are given equal importance. Back inside for tea time. "Funny Faces"I should like to think would be about the joy of getting shitfaced. And yes, that is a project I am currently (as I type this, in fact) working on. "End of the Season" a beautiful, and melancholic song about the passage of time. Which brings us to "Waterloo Sunset" THE most idealistic and romantic song ever recorded. Wotta record!

PINK FLOYD - THE EARLY SINGLES
I confess, I am a purist at heart. With the exception of a few bands, THE ROCK FOUR(for one ...hehehe), I've tried to like post-psyche bands (i.e) Plasticland, Three O'Clock, Plan 9 and some others I'm forgetting. I prefer shadings, colouration and yes, "flashes" of old sixties bands music littered into the new, future, and as of now, unheard rock bands music, rather than a complete stylistic "re-creation".
So, I remain uneasy about the "purist" label I've pinned on myself.. Yet, here I stand, digging and ultimately thrilled by the original Syd Barrett led Floyd.

DICTATORS _GO GIRL CRAZY/MANIFEST DESTINY/BLOODBROTHERS
It had to happen. With the hippies fading out concurrent with the Vietnam War ending, there was now a gap with a lot of pent up youthful energy out there potentially being wasted away. However, that energy (think hurricane Milton but transfer it to New York City)) started festering with the emergence of the New York Dolls, (later ricocheting to Queens and the Ramones) and God bless 'em, The Dictators. Americas greatest Rock band of all time bar none, bottled that energy and pumped it back out twice as hard, twice as smart and twice as fun. I rarely give advice because fools don't heed it and smart people don't need it, but anyone reading this that knows someone that still owns KISS albums, instead of all three of the DICTATORS quintessential 1970's records-that someone you know, should not be trusted in your home.
P.S. I wanna Yankees/Mets World Series : Robbins, Kaplan take the field!

U2 - BOY
A young man's mothers death and the hope to go forward and find adult love is the subject here. Straight away, young Paul Hewson "takes his mothers hand" she, having passed away when our protagonist at the tender age of fourteen. His struggle from boyhood to manhood ensues. He interacts with women, thinking aloud, in song, if this woman meets his mothers standards or at the very least approve, ("I know the truth about you".) "Out of Control" suggests our hero might be resorting to self destructive choices in the mean time. "Stories for Boys" suggests that the comforts of ordinary family bedtime literature does not apply to our songwriters predicament. He is a fish out of water, no solace. "The Ocean" is even more, if you can imagine such a vast, expansive surface, desolate. "A day without Me" suggests a breakout. Our protagonist has not only given up his feelings of self pity but also, thrown them off. "Another time, Another place" reaffirms faith. The ability to take what ,you have, not what you haven't, forward, into the future, in hopes to share and build with others. "Electric Co. is that connection to others.
No longer self absorbed and feeling the victim, our Paully's future looks bright. "Shadows and Tall Trees" is that human phenomena of looking forward but seeing where you have been.
Much more than a post-punk classic, a brilliant album that, like Dorian Gray, hasn't aged at all

TREES - SLEEP CONVENTION
At this point in the proceedings, I must defer to the fan club president. Kathleen wants to hear "some synth-pop". Fair enough.
The album is a chronicle of the worst possible day in anyone's life.
"Come Back", the girl leaves our guy, nuff said. "Shock of the new" is an awareness that evil persons control the TV/media.
"Delta Sleep" promises a much needed respite from the world. As sensible as R. Steve Moore's comfy tune out, "I Wanna Sleep" I know that's right. Track four: "No Stranger" more warnings to believe none of what you hear from media, and only half of what you see.
"Midnight in America" is the acknowledgement of the power media has over your brain, and that most of us would rather stick our heads in the sand than express our predicament with the current brainwashing media technology that were exposed to.
"11AM" DOOMSDAY CLOCK song. "Wildwood" corporate insanity and destruction prevail over Earth's natural beauty.
The natural sound of rain (at the end of the track) should be enough to console the average person, but the world is in the hands of insane people. The possibility of NUCLEAR rain just may rain down instead. "INDIA" there has to be a better place than America, might as well, get a passport to India
"Gotta Moon" Too late. People have no real awarness or understanding. The populace only recognize popular liars on television. That recognition is enough.
"RED CAR" well, that's the end it isn't?
An insane person that hates people takes over in charge . He gives an order to someone that needs his/her paycheck and let's fly nuclear bombs.
Goodnight all.

MUTTS - STINKO'S RANCH

Yeah, the fan club president has a lot more than fashion, women's reproductive rights and nuclear war on her mind.
She likes a good time as much as the next working class hero. So, courtesy on JIM GREEN, were spinning THE MUTTS classic 1992 feel good all over album, Stinko's Ranch. It took a lot of time to throw out all those shitty eighties hair bands aerosol cans,
but it was worth the wait.
Thanks Jim!

RIDE - OX4 (Best Of)
Finally, a band that zeros in on that perfect place where shoegaze and pop intersect.
I like the Stone Roses as much as anyone else, but the bands 'Beatleisms' ultimately tread a tired ground.
RIDE is a wonderful and gifted band that throw off constraints and reward modern listeners with repeated play-back.

ROLLERSKATE SKINNY - HORSEDRAWN WISHES
Ironically enough, Ira Robbins wrote of this album, "if the Beatles had achieved maximum cruising altitude in 1995, they might sound something like this" How's that for an endorsement?
A magnificent and enthralling record that sounds a lot fresher in 2024 than "Let it Be" did in 2000.

What if the person owns both?

Avoid people that own both KISS and Dictators records, they are probably hoarders.

I really believe I could live in a world of Bip's (the alternate reality being Biff's Emporium part two Back to the Future) emporium
Kathleen and I live in the oldest living/standing house in Avon Park, Fl. The deed is hand written by an Englishman from Stratford upon Avon(Bill Shakespears old digs) UK 1900.
I've spent the last twenty years preparing this little 28X28 cottage for anything the twenty first century could throw at it.
to include, ripping out the (5) ceiling rafters spread 5' almost 6' apart, replaced with 2x6 rafters every 24" dropped down to 8'.
Hand made metal rafter straps tying the rafters to the header. Bring it.
No worries mate.
If however, should we perish, I hereby donate my music collection, in whatever condition remains of it, to you, Bip.

My hurricane listening music today consisted of one album: Swervedriver - Raise

I am sure there will be more tomorrow before I need to move the stereo away from the window in my office.

Be safe Steve, and all the Floridians in the path of the storm. I can relate somewhat, we had a powerful hurricane smash through the Houston area back in July, music was an absolute necessity during and afterwards. I almost found myself standing out in the storm flipping both fingers to the sky and singing "It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine) by R.E.M. Fortunately, I realized that might have been an ill-conceived idea.
All articles of humor aside, I found jazz music to be rather effective in relieving some of the stress associated with fraught experiences, like hurricanes.

How are the Floridians who post here doing in the wake of the hurricane? I hope everyone's power is back.

I live 35 mins north of downtown Tampa. We had tons of wind and rain, but never lost power (which allowed me to watch 9 hours of MLB playoffs). My neighborhood is near a jail and a hospital, and being on that grid keeps the power on during storms (or so I'm told). Oh, and no damage to the house, just a little debris in the yard.

How about you, STEVE?

Howdy pardiner,
We were on the south side, pretty much due east of landfall. So, both eye walls passed through us.
Maximum winds about 90mph, but hardly any rain. You folks north of the center got all that. We lost power 9pm Wed, but had the power restored Fri 4pm. The old pioneer house took it like a champ, very comfortable inside. So, not bad at all zoo, thanks for asking. Ditto to rhett, Delvin, Bip, Aitch, steevee, fleeingbandit (yeah, parts of Houston flood big time). Love you guys.
