RIP Aston “Familyman” Barrett and Donald Kinsey
February 08, 2024 06:54AM
Both passed away within days of each other. Familyman was the original bassist for (Bob Marley &) The Wailers, playing on the vast majority of their records - first as a session player, then as a full-time member when the Wailers signed with Island and Chris Blackwell told them they'd have a much better chance at commercial success if they became a full, self-contained band.

American guitarist Donald Kinsey would also play with the Wailers, and he was there the night would-be assassins tried to murder Bob Marley in his own home. (Kinsey used a road case as a shield against the gunfire and fortunately was not struck.) An excellent soloist, he played with many of reggae's greats as well as others back in the U.S. like Albert King but he's probably best heard on Peter Tosh's post-Wailers records. Kinsey was a mentor and a member of the current incarnation of the Wailers to the very end.

I didn’t know Kinsey was in the Wailers. I know him from his blues band the Kinsey Report. RIP.
