Your daughter has very good taste. You taught her well (or maybe she did it all on her own).

Thanks. Well, 10 of the songs were my contribution but she's always been interested in underground music. But truth be told, her real faves (Tame Impala, Phoebe Bridgers, Steve Lacy and Tyler the Creator are too popular for her to play).

Don't those artists have any deep tracks or B-sides? (Granted, Tame Impala is the only one of those acts that I'm familiar with.)

I never hesitate to play The Rolling Stones, The Who, or Led Zeppelin (among other very famous acts), but I stick to the deeper album cuts. There are plenty of those to be found.

Probably, but she's limited to what she can find in their database and what I provided for her.

Aren't Yo La Tengo and Wire pretty popular? Wire has one of the best 1,2,3 album runs in music history and Yo La Tengo was repping Hanukkah years before Adam Sandler.

If only we lived in a world where they headlined Madison Square Garden or had gold singles and albums!

The rule is supposed to be an artist can't have more than a million spotify followers. It's not clear if that is for the artist or a particular song. Basically, the rule is to keep Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Harry Styles and the like off the radio. I think the older one goes, there isn't much scrutiny unless it's Fleetwood Mac or Led Zepplin

The over-arching rule, though, is: You can't please everybody.

I haven't gotten too many complaints from listeners about the songs/artists I've played, but I've received a few. Most of them have been personal bias of one sort or another, such as the guy who called during a world-music show to complain that I was playing music from Mexico: "What a shitty place!" A few callers have criticized me about one song selection or another, based on the unsavory behavior of the artist. And one lady called during the Gumbo Mix, after I'd played Spandau Ballet's "True," and tried to coerce me into promising never to play it again.

To be honest, I've never thought of Spandau Ballet as being gumbo music.

Well, the emphasis is on "mix." But when I do host the show, my wife usually makes it a point to request some zydeco music.
