Re: new radio show

new radio show
November 06, 2023 04:45PM
My daughter just started a radio show at the University of Pittsburgh and below is the playlist from her second show (her first show had several hiccups and some of the songs weren't ones that she picked). One of the rules is that she cannot use spotify to play music. The songs have to come from cds, records, bandcamp, soundcloud or the station data store. Also, the artists can't be too popular or something that would be played on regular radio. I'm not quite sure what the threshold is because I would think that Blur or the Gorillaz would be too popular. Needless to say, she doesn't have many cds or records to play (3 to be exact) so I burned 11 cds worth of music and sent it to her. We'll see how much (if any she uses).

It's on Tuesdays from 10AM to 12PM EST. Unfortunately, the shows are not archived. [www.wpts.pitt.edu]

I guess BOC gets a pass because it was a request?

BOC is to college radio today as Dion was to college radio in the `80s. At least that's my way of thinking. I wanted her to play 'Joan Crawford' better suited for Halloween but the station didn't have it. My daughter said that some artists are considered heritage acts (college radio trendsetters) get a pass. She doesn't really know what constitutes heritage yet.

Congratulations!

Do record labels still mail vinyl and CDs off to college radio stations? Or at least send out MP3s instead of expecting the station to play music off Spotify and Bandcamp?

Yes, in many cases, they do. Or if the artist is operating in indie mode, they'll send the CDs or forward the links themselves.

Congratulations-! Will check this out.

A lot of publicists use Disco (disco.ac), which lets you download or listen. The disco.ac will typically (frequently but not always) include an FCC-friendly radio edit. (I didn't know until just a few days ago that the version of "Bad Idea, Right?" by Olivia Rodrigo to which I'm accustomed is actually a radio edit.)

Also, FYI: DMCA (or whatever the abbreviation is) permits 2-week archive. There are also a lot of stations (like KOOP in TX) that archive to Mixcloud, which covers licensing.

from Shonen Kninfe to Whodini? Well done, Li'l Heff!

Physical formats are def still a thing. I request digital (preferably lossless) files, but I'm often asked if I want vinyl/cassette/CD.

And at WFMU, all shows are archived forever. We don't take them down after 2 weeks. We have shows in RealAudio going back over 20 years.

The name of the show is 'Freak Out!' so she tries to play songs with 'Freak' in the title. Of course, I forgot to burn Graham Coxon's 'Freaking Out' for her but I remedy that this thanksgiving break.

Haha. Material Issue, "Freak City Soundtrack." Dinosaur Jr., "Freak Scene." Missy Elliott, "Get Ur Freak On." (Including the amazing mashups made for that song, like Missy x Nirvana and Missy x George Michael). The North Country, "Freaks." Hot Chip, "Freakout/Release." Just a few that come to mind.

Ah that explains whodini’s ‘freaks come out at night’!

We’ll since we’re on a roll, I’ll add korn ‘freak on a leash’ and ‘freak a zoid’ by Midnight Star, a nice slice of 80s electro

I dropped excerpts from the movie "Freaks" into my channel's stream. "Gooba gabba, we accept you! One of us, one of us!"

"Freaks" - Soul Asylum
"Hungry Freaks, Daddy" - Mothers of Invention
"Freaks" - Marillion
"Freak of the Week" - Funkadelic
"Super Freak" - Rick James

And then there's this:
"Help Youngblood Get to the Freaky Party" - Tina Marie

If you haven't heard this song, you have to...it's absolutely bonkers. Sung from her point of view, she meets a guy on the way home from church who tries to tempt her with coke and a good time--along with some lame pickup lines--to go to a party across town. She quotes him some Bible verses and tells him no, but he keeps persisting. At the end of the song, she's wailing about how she's not going to "help Youngblood get to the freaky party." I bought this album a few years ago mainly for "Lovergirl," and that's how I discovered this "Youngblood" song. Her voice is incredible.

Oh mr Fab, that movie. Saw it on AMC awhile back and… well… let’s just say that movie kinda stays with you.
You gotta love Schlitzie.
