DSOTM Redux

Just finished listening to Roger Waters' Darkside of the Moon Redux. That I made it all the way through means something, but I don't know what, because it's not good. Let's put it this way...if I had never heard the original, I would have turned this off during the first song. The simplest way to describe it is that it is supremely mellow, sung in a hushed tone, devoid of any guitar solos, and filled with a bunch of creepy new spoken word passages, sometimes in the middle of songs. Now that I've heard it, I'll never do so again. But I'll probably never listen to the original again, either, at this point in my life.

I heard "Money" and thought "Roger Waters sounds like a parody of Leonard Cohen." The original wasn't exactly a barrel of laughs, but Waters sure takes himself seriously.

A recent show in London featured a second half featuring DSOTM Re-dux, and the first part about actual ducks - Waters sitting at a table, reading apparently unprepared autobiographical musings from a laptop, inc. a 20-minute story about a pet duck. A grand total of TWO songs were performed in this half, before Waters' spoken-word ramblings resumed. As members of the crowd got bored, and started to talk amongst themselves, or even boo or shout out song titles, Waters predictable lashed out, telling them to F off.

The second half commenced with another 20-minute ramble, as Waters explained every song on DSOTM, in a track-by-track analysis. The music itself was well-received, among those who hadn't already headed to the exits.

Waters is pushing 80 - think he's finally quacking up?

Thanks for the info, gents. I didn't have any interest in hearing what the miserable old crab had to offer, as a re-definition of such a classic work. From McCartney (with Let It Be ... Naked) to Prince (with his "new master" of the single "1999") to Waters, these guys just can't resist revisiting (or co-opting) their past work like this, and the results just never measure up. Geniuses never learn.
