Can't-Miss Band Name Formula

Musicians! Need a cool band name? Try the ol' "city name/noun" trick:

- London SS
- Berlin Blondes
- Berlin Blackouts
- Dresden Dolls
- New York Dolls
- N.Y.C. Peech Boys
-Bakersfield Boogie Boys
- Hollywood Brats
- Hollywood Vampires
- L.A. Vampires
- L.A. Witch
- Utah Saints
- Tokio Hotel
- Tokyo Police Club
- Detroit Cobras
- Detroit Emeralds

Weirdly enough, the above list almost seems to tell a story..?

Need something less decadent and gritty, more wholesome, something more like "Springfield Sisters" or "Des Moines Deacons."

If Mattel wouldn't sue them, the San Francisco Barbies? Birmingham (Alabama) Rattlesnakes? A competing band from Birmingham, UK?

I don't know that the formula is foolproof. I can't imagine anyone getting too excited over the Scranton Foibles or the Moline Headlines.

True. So I guess it has to be a "cool" city, not just any place. And as Delvin pointed out, the wrong noun and you're sounding like a sports team.
Like, "Moscow" seems a natural, but can't think of anyone called The Moscow somethings. Go for it, bands!

Apparently, there really was a band called The Nashville Cats, but it was an informal group of session pros, like The Wrecking Crew. The Loving Spoonful song was about them. (This has been your Fun Fact of The Day.)

Too many such band names could easily be confused with sports teams.

That said, I do see a potential show theme ... or at least a block or two of songs. Thanks, Fab!

I think that I initially thought that the name of the "LA Nuggets" box set was a reference to some sort of sports team.

Considering how thoroughly the Nuggets dispatched the Lakers these past playoffs, I would welcome an LA Nuggets team.

90's band Mary's Danish

The food item, the nationality, or something else?

Funny, I've always assumed that the band name refers to the pastry. It never occurred to me to interpret it as "Mary is Danish."

Same here! But Mary is Danish makes as much sense.

I never heard a note of them, but I think I recall there being a band called “Foxboro Hot Tubs,” that I think had some Green Day connection?

Motor City 5!!!
Leyton Buzzards
Lower East Side Stitches
Salem 66…?
Berlin. Irving Berlin
Saigon Kick (yikes, sorry)
Münchener Freiheit

Yeah, Foxboro Hot Tubs basically is Green Day pretending to be the early Kinks. (Which isn't to say their album Stop Drop & Roll!!! isn't worth hearing.)

Haha, I was thinking about how there’s so many “Detroit” bands and didn’t even consider the MC5.

I saw a terrible group called Brooklyn Dreams on “American Bandstand” once. Maybe they could share a bill with the New York Dolls, Village People, Lower East Side Stitches, Crown Heights Affair, vintage jazz band The Harlem Hamfats, The Bronx (once they append a noun to their name), and, er, Queens…of the Stoneage?

I remember seeing Brooklyn Dreams on The Midnight Special. By that time, they basically were the backup group for Donna Summer. As I recall, though, it was pretty clear to see that the group's singer was Donna's main squeeze. (She married the guy in 1980; they stayed together until her death in 2012.)

Apparently a verb, judging from the title of their debut album Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks.

I dunno. Those could all be nouns. You might spill your Saigon shake while driving over Hanoi rocks if your Bangkok shocks aren't up to snuff.

Fab, can you fit the New York Citi Peech Boys in there, too?
And plain old Crown Heights…if they can find a stray noun?

'80s glam-punks Soho Roses.

They were from London - not the NYC Soho. So, they could play with London SS, Sleaford Mods, and Leyton Buzzards.

I was going to add Brownsville Station to the list of NYC band names (a la Brownsville, Brooklyn) until I looked em up - they were from Detroit. But as there does not appear to be any place named Brownsville in Michigan, what the heck, let's add em anyway.

I had assumed they were from Texas before I found out they were from Michigan.
