He didn't have a huge discography, but it was enough to make him power pop royalty, having written & recorded the original version of "Hanging on the Telephone" with the Nerves, and also providing "Will Anything Happen" for Parallel Lines and "Come Back and Stay" for Paul Young.

Wonder why he never moved forward the way his Nerve-mates Paul Collins and Pete Case did...

Maybe he could live conformably off those Blondie royalties?

Wow, that's a name from power pop long-ago royalty. I just remember the pissy song by Plimsouls, "Playing with Jack," where Peter Case sings about never going back to playing with Jack Lee. (It was on a Yellow Pills compilation.)

I’d think the real ‘royalty’ money came from proceeds from the Paul Young track (although it’s always ‘Hangin on the telephone’ that gets mentioned)…..

"Come Back and Stay " got one place higher on the British chart, but "Hangin'" has had a long life, being covered by other folks since Blondie made it a British hit, including, of all people, Def Leppard.

Though, frankly, I doubt either of those songs being top 5 hits in England would be enough to sustain a lifetime of income, especially once streaming hit.

I'd never heard of either the song "Come Back and Stay" or Paul Young, so I checked it out.

THAT was a mistake. Sounded nothing like The Nerves. Or anything else I'd want to listen to. I made it about half-way thru before bailing. If it was an American hit, it didn't hit me.

"Come Back and Stay" was a pretty minor hit over here. Young's big hit over here was a cover of Hall & Oates' "Everytime You Go Away." I bet you'd recognize it if you heard it. I think he was a mainstay on the British charts after that, though.

Wow, Jack Lee's version of "Come Back and Stay" is rough and scrappy, like a Replacements song almost. But Variety says that Paul Young covered three Jack Lee songs on his first album!

Ouch! I like the version of "Come Back and Stay." And I have Paul Young's greatest hits on CD, although I admit there are some lamentable inclusions, such as Joni Mitchell cover with Clannad which is as ominous as that collaboration would imply. And he sadly mistreats "Don't Dream It's Over."
