Re: Peter Gabriel Tour

Peter Gabriel Tour
March 07, 2023 05:31PM
Peter Gabriel! Now there's a name I haven't thought of in a while. At least in terms of contemporary music. I still pull out some of his early solo classics every now and then, and they're still mighty fine. But honestly, I probably haven't heard anything new from him in years. Decades? But whatdoyaknow, he is actually still making new music:

"i/o - The Tour will see Gabriel playing new material from his forthcoming album i/o, as well as delving into his peerless catalogue of music, with hits, fan favourites and the unexpected. For the shows, Gabriel will be joined by regular band-mates Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Katché. "

After touring Europe/UK May 18-June 25th, he'll be hitting very few American cities so far ("More Cities and Shows to Be Announced Soon...Fans should also stay tuned for future tour date announcements in Washington, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Paul, Denver, Austin, Dallas and Houston.")

September 8 Quebec City, Quebec Videotron Centre
September 9 Ottawa, Ontario Canadian Tire Centre
September 11 Toronto, Ontario Scotiabank Arena
September 13 Montreal, Quebec Bell Centre
September 14 Boston, Massachusetts TD Garden
September 16 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Wells Fargo Center
September 18 New York, New York Madison Square Garden
September 30 Chicago, Illinois United Center

October 7 Vancouver, British Columbia Rogers Arena
October 8 Seattle, Washington Climate Pledge Arena
October 11 San Francisco, California Chase Center
October 13 Los Angeles, California Kia Forum

5 months, traveling all over the world...pretty epic for a 73 year old. Take your Geritol, Peter.

Wow, very cool news. I'd encourage anyone to see Peter Gabriel in concert. As it happens, my wife and I just got done reviewing our concert plans and travel plans for the rest of '23, and I don't think this one is in the cards for us.

Austin at last. I was just talking the other day to an acquaintance who saw Gabriel's last Austin performance, and that was in 1982. He didn't even come through on the So tour.

I saw him in 1993 at the WOMAD festival in Indianapolis. It wasn't a full set, but glad I did. Would definitely be willing to see again; the Secret World live CD/DVD of the Us tour in Italy was amazing.

Seeing him on the Amnesty International concert on...MTV, maybe? not sure...was what made me a fan. My girlfriend and I tuned in at her mother's house in Houston (I didn't have cable at home) at her mom's insistence (her mom was pretty hip). I wanted to watch it for U2 and Lou Reed, but came away with my mind blown by Gabriel's set. That's still my favorite version of "Shock the Monkey."

I've never been a big fan (the association with Genesis was too much for me to swallow as a rebel teen who was into punk and new wave), but I heard his most recent single - "Panopticon" from the upcoming album - a few weeks go and it was quite decent. I expect that the album itself will be a decent effort too.

As a solo artist, he was always more popular in Canada than in the U.S. Not surprised at all that he's starting off with four huge venues on this side of the border (although he's playing similar-sized places in the U.S. too I see, making it an NHL tour).

I didn't know that Peter Gabriel was considered more popular in Canada! Although that makes sense to a point, given Genesis' extreme Britishness, that a Commonwealth nation might be more amenable. But the NBA/NHL-sized arena is not a shock. I would love to see him at outdoor amphitheaters in the summer like a Merriweather Post or a Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Capacity of 15,000-19,000 but maybe a better vibe than a basketball arena?

he def became a massive American star after "So," but it took a while to get there. I was a fan thanks to my hippie big sister who bought his first album (on 8-track!) and would crank up "Solisbury Hill" when it came on the radio. But she saw him at the Roxy on Sunset, not in a stadium (she even went back stage and met him, I think). So apparently his solo career began small, playing clubs. After Genesis, it was like starting from scratch, I guess, at least in the US.

I had a bootleg of one of those Roxy shows - no Genesis songs, and since he only had the one solo album, he played covers of Marvin Gaye ("Ain't That Peculiar") and The Kinks ("All Day and All of the Night") to fill out the set.

I loved peter gabriel from 1978-1986. "On The Air" and "D.I.Y." were my entry point. Any time before "So [What]" …as I call it, I would have been there in a heartbeat. After 1986, he completely dropped from my wheelhouse. I got the "Play: the Videos" DVD in 2004 just to see the "Modern Love" clip that was missing from the "Japanese "CV" laserdisc I had, and all of the post "So" stuff I caught on MTV was boring to me compared to especially his 3rd and 4th albums. The third one is still astonishing to my ears. You never forget the first time you heard a Chapman Stick! My lucky wife saw him at Blossom Music Center in Akron in 1983!

But I was in Ohio recently and my brother-in-law had a cache of laserdiscs that he said I could have anything in there as he'd saved them from disposal for me! I took some classic films ["Casablanca," "Godfather I + II" etc.] but I also grabbed the "Secret World Live" LD to see what I deliberately missed in 1993 when he actually came to an arena in my city and I could have cared less. What I had heard from "Us" via MTV in the early 90s was boring to me. We'll give this LD of the tour a spin one day…maybe. That later stuff is so solemn and bloodless. Like U2 trying to make Art Rock.

Oof, I would go - I've never been to a Peter Gabriel concert and hesitated only because I wasn't sure if he was going to focus on his newer material, which I haven't liked all that much. But the cheapest tickets at MSG are $144. For the absolute worst seats. Regretfully will have to pass.

I saw PG on the Secret World tour in 1993 or so at the Miami Arena. It was...OK. The highlight for me was "San Jacinto" which is probably my favorite song of his, so I was really happy to experience it performed live. Anyway, it was a fine enough show, but the setlist was drawn heavily from the US album, which wasn't all that great IMO. I am glad that I went and I got to see him in concert nonetheless.

It just occurred to me that it took 3 separate shows to see the 5 classic members of Genesis in concert (Genesis, 1987; Gabriel, 1993; Steve Hackett, 2022).

Zoo, that's the tour I saw, except in my case, I thought it was a spectacular show -- perhaps because I really like the Us album. It may not be his most consistent release, but its peak songs are exceptional.

I never saw Genesis, with any lineup, but I've seen Gabriel, Hackett and Collins. He wasn't on one of his solo tours; he was the drummer in Eric Clapton's band. I think that tour was a busman's holiday for Phil. He was excellent on the drums that night, and very much a team player.

I also saw Bill Bruford playing with Yes in the early '90s when they did the Union thing. Not sure if anyone considers him an "official" member of Genesis, but he played on a tour with them and appears on the Seconds Out live album.

Just announced the expanded dates:

Sept. 20: Washington, D.C. (Capital One Arena)
Sept. 22: Buffalo, N.Y. (KeyBank Center)
Sept. 23: Pittsburgh (PPG Paints Arena)
Sept. 25: Columbus, Oh. (Nationwide Arena)
Sept. 27: Cleveland (Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse)
Sept. 29: Detroit (Litle Caesars Arena)

Oct. 2: Milwaukee (Fiserv Forum)
Oct. 3: St. Paul, Mn. (Xcel Energy Center)

Oct. 14: Palm Springs, Ca. (Acrisure Arena)
Oct. 16: Denver (Ball Arena)
Oct. 18: Austin, Tx. (Moody Center)
Oct. 19: Dallas (American Airlines Arena)
Oct. 21: Houston, Tx. (Toyota Center)

Funny that he's playing Cap1 in DC. Before he had to tour with Sting to play at that place; solo, he was at the Patriot Center which is George Mason University's basketball arena smack in suburban northern Virginia. Now Sting plays at (relatively) small Wolftrap. I guess fortunes have changed.
