Did some fine work on Hallucination Engine too.

He was a giant. His solo record Super Nova is a special favorite of mine. Now I'm sad.

I suspected the end might be near when he retired from touring.

He was a pioneer in his solo career, with Weather Report, and with Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet. Not too many people can say that.

I figured I missed my chance to see him live given his health in recent years, but it's still heartbreaking that he's gone now. What an incredible career, it's pretty astonishing what he accomplished and how much ground he covered. The Miles Davis quintet with him, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams will remain my favorite, but his other records with Miles Davis and his time with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers is close behind.

Apparently Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas's group Sound Prints are currently doing shows at the Village Vanguard. The group, which has been around for a while now, is by design a tribute of sorts to Shorter's work - these shows were scheduled months ago, but I imagine they'll feel even more potent these next few days.

Maybe that's a big reason why a lot of "legacy acts" just keep touring. They become like sharks -- they're compelled to keep moving, or they fear they'll sink to the bottom and die.
