Happy 90th Birthday, Yoko

If I may quote from my WFMU colleague Mike Rogers, who lives in Tokyo and has met Ms Ono:

"Her grandfather founded the Yasuda group. His family owned the company. Yasuda would have made them in the top 4 of the richest families in Japan... The Beatles sold lots of records, but Yasuda group made billions of dollars annually.

Yoko Ono was smart with money. She helped the Beatles break free from a contract that was cheating them."

Fascinating info, for those who still think that it was Yoko who was the gold-digger...

According to this, Ono's immediate family was written out of the Yasuda inheritance before Ono's father was born. They were wealthy and privileged, but not billionaire-equivalent wealth.

But the Scarsdale-Sarah Lawrence thing is wild; I had no idea.

Yoko had to endure the very public shellacking for “breaking up the Beatles”….when all she was likely guilty of was being infatuated with John, as he was with her.

Then she had to deal with his loss, again in a public stage.

I don’t know how I could’ve gotten through either situation. She has to be an incredibly strong woman.
