Songs mocking The Beatles
October 06, 2022 04:50PM
I came across an article today about the Steely Dan song "Only a Fool Would Say That": The song Steely Dan wrote to mock John Lennon

I love a good mocking of Lennon as much as the next guy, but I can't think of too many that fit the bill. The Damned song "Would You Be So Hot (If You Weren't Dead)?" is a good one. And of course, though not an anti-Beatles song, Joe Strummer did refer to "phony Beatlemania."

Any other songs you can think of that dis the individual members or the band as a whole?

On social media in the last few years, almost all the criticism of Lennon is about him beating women and being a champagne socialist who sang "Imagine no possessions" while nearly being a billionaire. Little of it seems to have much to do with his music itself (or the Beatles'), but there must be songs out there attacking him for these reasons.

John Lennon mocked McCartney on ‘How do you sleep’. Does that count?

Otherwise….you’d think one of the LA hardcore acts would’ve done it, but I can’t recall an example

A friend who went to college in northern California (Humboldt County, to be exact) sent me a tape of a hardcore band from Arcata called Agent 86. One of their songs included the lyrics:

"Hippies all feel sorry for
Poor dead boy, John Lennon-whore
It's hard for me to share their feelings
Knowing that he died with millions."

This is not a case of mocking (or even the Beatles), (and apologies for possibly ruining an Easter egg from a 15 year old movie) but my favorite joke in the great but strangely underrated Role Models comes after a couple of instances of clueless characters insisting - much to Paul Rudd's confusion - that Wings had a massive hit song called "Love Take Me Down To the Streets", then the closing credits trot out such a pitch-perfect parody of McCartney & Wings doing such a song that you briefly wonder " Wait! Did Wings do a song called 'Love Take Me Down To the Streets'?"

It's a perfectly executed, entirely throwaway joke that has little or nothing to actually do with the movie and one that most people won't even be aware of because it plays over the closing credits long after anyone has quit watching or whatever channel is showing it on TV has cut the credits off. I love it.

Again, absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand, but it made me think of it.

House of Love? "The Beatles + The Stones…suck the marrow out of bones" surely counts!

And did The Rutles mock The Beatles or exalt them in a backhanded way? I'm still not sure about that one. But I have Rutles music and even a Rutles tribute album in my racks. No Beatles. So I consider it mocking though I can see the other perspective equally as well. [caveat: my wife has some Lennon/Harrison solo material in there] There should be more than a few Paul McCartney disses as he asked for it! But none come to mind.

George Harrison was in the Rutles movie, so I'm guessing more (if not totally) the latter than the former.

A Rutles tribute album? Seriously? Did the music come from just one artist? Or are there really enough artists/bands out there, playing the Rutles' songs, to compile a full tribute album -- to a band that made its name parodying another band?

Wow, this has my mind sputtering ... in a good way. Ya made my day, Monk.

I just remembered: there was a punk band in Colorado Springs called Three More Bullets ... as in, "What'll it take to reunite The Beatles?"
