Per Syd Straw on Facebook. Haven't seen it confirmed elsewhere, but I would think Syd would be a reliable source.

Here's the story from NME.

That's too bad. He really was a pretty phenomenal drummer. I know many people slag Black Sheets of Rain, but it's one of my fave Mould solo albums and, for better or worse, I think Fier was largely responsible for that sound.

On the other hand, I've never heard anyone slag Workbook. Fier's drumming is excellent on both.

I read a review back when it came out that slagged it plenty, mainly for using acoustic guitars, strings, varying moods, and generally not sounding like Zen Arcade.

But agreed in Fier’s drumming on both records.

I love both Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain (and lots of other records with Anton Fier), but I've definitely heard people slag both of them. Workbook was a significant departure for Mould, and lots of people didn't appreciate that!

Workbook is one of my favorite albums, full stop. It made me a Mould fanatic.

I’ve always been fond of Black Sheets as well.

We’re only scraping the surface here. Fier has a DEEP resume, many contributions I didn’t realize until I started looking into them tonight. If you don’t have any records with Anton Fier on them somewhere, well….you haven’t got any records!

Herbie Hancock, bill laswell, feelies, lounge lizards… he is all over my records.

(guilty confession… I’ve confused him on several confessions with drummer Anton Fig… who also has a long list of varied credits)

I also saw the news via Syd Straw's Facebook post. I still own and listen to those Golden Palominos records; it was one one of those weird floating ensembles that existed around that era (This Mortal Coil!) that incorporated a vast array of singers (Syd, Lori Carson, Michael Stipe) and players (Richard Thompson, Matthew Sweet) in a wide range of styles, indicating both his variety and the depth of respect that other musicians had for his work.

Well, when I hear anyone slag Bob Mould's work -- whether it's his solo albums, Sugar or Hüsker Dü -- I just figure, "Sorry sweetie, but I don't need this kind of negativity in my life."

The New York Times has a lengthy but somewhat painful obituary.
