Man, that's sad. BEGINNING TO SEE THE LIGHT is one of the few essay collections on pop culture and society that is worth repeated readings. The piece about her brother's embrace of Orthodox Judaism and move to Jerusalem is a strikingly sympathetic and probing examination - from the secular left - of a conservative religious community, and of course her rock criticism is essential.
