Everything I need to know, I learned from Sparks

Everything I need to know, I learned from Sparks

Talent is an asset.
Never turn your back on Mother Earth.
Miss the start, miss the end.
Everybody's stupid.
Love can conquer all.
Sainthood is not in my future.

I’ve been listening to Sparks a lot lately, and I had no idea I was getting a philosophical education!

What Are All These Bands So Angry About?

Lighten up, Morrissey.

Words of wisdom, indeed!

A year later, this thread gets another jolt.

I was listening to No. 1 in Heaven earlier this week, and the lyrics to "Tryouts for the Human Race" tweaked my ear in a way they never had before. After countless listens, I finally realized what the song is about. Jeez, even sex ed is available from Sparks' records!

Delvin - Welcome to the party! You think that's rough, I was just listening to "Wallflower" from Peter Gabriel's 4th album. Which I've had for 41 years now. I'd go as far as saying that in the last decade, Wallflower" has been my favorite song there. This last weekend, I just realized that the song is about political prisoners! Duuuuuuh!

Allow me to pile on (and subvert a perfectly fine Sparks thread, I suppose).

For a long time I’ve been familiar with the phrase such and such “is the only game in town”.

It was just this morning as I was brushing my teeth that it occurred to me that Elvis Costello was using kinda clever wordplay with the title of “only flame in town”. Bizarre I’d never realized that before! Double duhhh!

(side note— he was really channeling the ‘sophisti-pop’ sound with that track, no?)

With harmony vocals provided by Daryl Hall? He was channeling some sort of contemporaneous pop sound, for sure.
