Not a good week for drummer.

Yes, terrible news. I put together a short remembrance for him: The Beat's Everett Morton Passes Away at 71.

Ahhh, I almost don’t reply because I grow tired of the RIP’s and also because the general age of our heroes means that obituaries are going to become more frequent.

But these are among my heroes growing up. ‘I just can’t stop it’ is a hands-down classic and will enliven ANY party. The drum intro to ‘mirror in the bathroom’ is entrenched in my brain. And Familyman’s post mentioned it was Everett who introduced the band to Saxa. I can’t imagine that album without him.

Yeah, The English Beat was a big part of my college years. Just like U2 and INXS in their initial Eighties bursts, I could never get tickets to see the Beat; they always sold out so fast. Each of those three bands sold out repeated appearances at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver, and eventually a single night at Red Rocks. No tickets available for yours truly. U2 and INXS went on to bigger fame after their Red Rocks appearances; for the Beat, that was all she wrote.

Rest in peace, Everett. I'm sure Roger and Saxa will be there to welcome you on the other side.
