For fans of Game Theory and Ted Leo

A Baltimore-based band, Proper Nouns, has some uncannily Scott Miller/Ted Leo-like songs and vocal tone. I don't know if the songcraft is the same level, but fans of slightly-adenoidal, high-energy power pop should check them out.

Thanks for sharing!

I gave a quickie run-through their songs on bandcamp and really liked ‘fear to care’.

Your comparisons are apt, but I also kept thinking “ this sounds like ____”. The Shins? Elliot Smith slightly at times? Something else on the tip of my tongue?

Nasally singing at times like Elliott Smith, but the backing and the instrumentation doesn't remind me much otherwise.

I think it was only on ‘twenty teen’ that I really heard Elliot. Sometimes I hear Posies in their songs also.

Not really fair to sit and do spot the influence. Good songs are good songs regardless.

Hear, hear. I couldn't plan a show like mine if I got too fussy about influence-spotting ... much less if I thought about ruling out any band that wore its influences too obviously on its collective sleeve.
