Wow, that's a really cool set! I like the mix of "southern rock" with bands that simply hail from the south.

Of the "newer" bands on that list, I have to admit to really liking My Morning Jacket. They've got plenty of clunkers in their catalog, but I've put together what I consider a pretty great playlist on Spotify.

Glad you like it, Zoo! Yeah, I'm sure the guy who made that request wasn't expecting something like that. But there was no way I was going to fill a two-hour set with second-rate Skynyrds, such as Blackfoot and Molly Hatchet.

To me, about 3/4 of the bands in that set are quintessentially Southern -- whether because their sound hews closely enough to the Allmans/Skynyrd blueprint, or because of their cultural references and subject matter, or simply because I became familiar with them during the time I've spent in the south. Man or Astro-Man? may be seen mainly as a kitschy surf-rock band, but seeing them on stage in blue & orange space suits cemented their association with Auburn, AL for me. Will & the Bushmen were the godfathers of the Mobile, AL rock scene; what The Auto-No was for me, during my college years, Will & the Bushmen were for my wife during hers.

What a fun set! Dash Rip Rock! The Pressure Boys! Wonderful. I may have to go for a coffee break when you play 38 Special, but hey, you can't please everyone all the time.

I'm not familiar with the Pressure Boys, but had I not known this was a Southern show, I would have bet their song was an outtake from the Kaiser Chiefs.

I agree with Greg Allman that “southern rock” is a redundancy. Originally, pretty much ALL rock was southern rock!

Hmm… I’ll grant you that you and Allman may be right… and certainly ANY rock from the south ( like Pylon) could qualify as Southern Rock.

I was certainly good with Delvin’s approach.

But let’s all be honest. ‘Southern Rock’ ( or as I like to call it, ala K-Tel,‘Southern Fried Rock’) has a distinct sound. Like pornography, I know it when I hear it. And so do you. So does your mama. Everyone knows the sound!

That distinct sound gets labeled country music (or Americana) these days. Take Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell or Eric Church. I'm pretty sure that if Lynyrd Skynyrd were new artists in 2021, they'd be considered a country band.

Oh man, that Juana Molina YouTube you linked is wonderful! I wasn't familiar with her but I will seek her out. I have a pretty good collection of Argentine rock, but it's pretty much all from the 80s (to be fair, most of my collection from any country is from the 80s). Thanks for the tip!

That's true. I had considered dedicating a block to the earliest American rockers -- Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard, James Brown, and so forth. But it just didn't fit right with the rest of the program.
