Good band alert

Good band alert

Am I unconsciously parroting (or parodying) another magazine with that headline? I dunno.

Anyway, I'm currently listening to the debut album by a guitar band called Swallow the Rat, called Leaving Room. They have membership split between New Zealand and here in Austin, and are a little psych rock, a little postpunk, a little straightahead rock - maybe like a mix of Swerverdriver and Eleventh Dream Day, with a little Fall thrown in for vocals. I figured some of y'all might be into it.

You can listen to 'em on Bandcamp here.

They're on the label Shifting Sounds, which is a British/Austin co-venture that has some other nifty bands, like Magnet School, Blushing, Honeyrude, Black Books and the Sound Movement.

Enjoy (or don't).

This ain't bad at all! I hear the Swervedriver influence, which isn't a bad thing at all in my book. Thanks!

I'll definitely give 'em a listen. Anyone that mixes Swervedriver, Eleventh Dream Day, and the Fall deserves to be heard. Plus, since you turned me on to Pigs x 7 a while back, I'm inclined to follow your guidance....

Yes! The lead single “New Cross” came across my desk shortly before the pandemic kicked in but I guess I kinda forgot about them after slotting it into the show. Thank you for the reminder. Such a great guitar sound...

Yeah, I'm definitely a sucker for they do with guitars. You should also check out the Austin band Magnet School, who are on the same label.

Hot damn - thanks, Michael! Looking forward to the new record and will try to get to that show at Mississippi Studios (I'm in Portland and that's basically in my neighborhood!).

Finally getting around to listening to this and I dig it quite a bit. I also hear some Bailter Space/Gordons in there, which is unsurprising given the Kiwi connection. And good call on the Eleventh Dream Day reference - I hear it mostly in the vocals. but if you hadn't said that, I would have been wracking my brain trying to figure out who the singer reminded me of!

Thanks! Definite vibes of Bailter Space and the Gordons....! The guitarist was in the Austin group My Education?

Brian Purington, yes. He was also in our local psych punk weirdos Baby Robots. Versatile guy.

I ended up liking this enough to send away to them for the LP. I like it a lot, but there really is a lot of "spot the influence" going on. I can add Sonic Youth and Polvo to the above list of bands I'm reminded of as I listen to it.
