A lot of requests, which always makes it fun to do this show. One caller, though, complained that I had played "only three black songs" during the whole show. (He called during the Stevie Wonder song.) Like a dimwit, I argued with the guy as I scrolled back through the playlist. "Yeah, whatever, man," he said. "Tell the guy who usually hosts the show not to put you on anymore, 'cuz you just ain't got it goin' on."

Cheers, Aitch! Yeah, I told D. Duane, the regular host, about the call. He laughed and said, "You should've told him to kiss your ass! I never intended the program to be a 'black' show. It's The Gumbo Mix, and anyone knows you add all sorts of things to a pot of gumbo. That's where the flavor comes from!"

And believe me, Duane puts his money where his mouth is. He really dug it that my last installment of The Gumbo Mix included requests for Johnny Cash, Doris Day and Motörhead.
