The 1975 review

So I'd heard a few songs by the 1975 and thought they were OK when the buzz for their third album, A BRIEF INQUIRY INTO ONLINE RELATIONSHIPS, starting building as they released singles and videos starting last summer, until it's probably become 2018's best-reviewed album after Kacey Musgraves' GOLDEN HOUR and Mitski's BE THE COWBOY. I hope this review doesn't come off as a "hot take" or wallow in cynicism; I'm suspicious of that consensus, even if I enjoy many of their songs: [medium.com]

Took me awhile to hear this album but I've finally listened to it a few times through now. While I think I'd like it more if I were thirty years younger, I do like it. The middle third slows down a little more than I'd wish, before hitting the single.

But to Steevee's bigger point...it may very well be true that in "the world of today", it is possible to generate 'album of the year' zeitgeist around ANYTHING.
Even in today's political climate, merely saying anything...ANYTHING... over and over again is to make it true for those who want to believe. (Hey, is this the Santa phenomenon?)

Not my thing (at all)- but I have a hard time naming another young, loosely affiliated with "Rock" in any way (or Pop) band that puts as much genuine thought into their sound, look, songs (and sounds) and album themes as they do on this record.

You have to appreciate it, well not really, but you could appreciate it I guess......it's the sound of the mall if you got yourself one of them.

I think the 1975 song would have been better if it was called "Love AS IF We Made It," which was what I first thought it was going to be called. I read someone calling it a millennial "We Didn't Start the Fire," and now that is how I'm conceiving it.
