R.I.P. Conway Savage

Best known as a Bad Seed. Probably deserves more credit for their evolution.
Did some pretty cool stuff on his own and with Dave Graney.

I just read his obit on Pitchfork. Very sad.

His solo stuff is extremely difficult to find, but I have one of those records. It's very low key and soulful. His work with the Bad Seeds was invaluable. This is a real shame. And so soon after his pal Spencer P. Jones.

Speaking of which, check out this video for Jones' "Execution Day." It's an incredible lineup of talent, but four of the five folks performing in this vid are gone, two of them in the past week. This generation of Australian rockers seems targeted by the grim reaper.

How did he contribute so much to the Bad Seeds? Im afraid I don't know anything about this fella, but sounds like I should.

There’s no doubting the brilliance of Bad Seeds platters 1-5, especially Tender Prey. But I think his addition enabled them to continue to develop differently. It meant that they were totally their own beast. I remember Cave around the time of Let Love In saying in an interview “I’ve got a really good band now.”
I think they’ve really lost a bit with the absence of Harvey and Savage although he’d be a bit of a luxury with the amount of piano Cave plays these days. Keys are part of Barry Adamson’s roving commission when he’s on board too. My favourite of theirs is No More Shall We Part and he's front and centre there.
