Completely missed the news about the Molly Hatchet dude - Dave Hlubek, who was apparently the Molly Hatchet dude. He founded the band and was the leader until he left sometime in the 80s, at which point the vocalist trademarked the name and carried on as a zombie band with no original members, until Hlubek returned as a hired hand in the band he started but no longer controlled.

(Disclaimer: I learned all this from looking up Molly Hatchet on line. I do not posess vast stores of Molly Hatchet lore, and Southern Rock in general remains a swamp I've only barely tiptoed around the edges of. I was surprised a few months ago to discover that a song I never minded hearing on the radio back in the 80s was by .38 Special, as it was within a stone's throw of power pop, something I never associated with the bearded Southern brotherhood. All of which is neither here nor there.)

I'm guessing it either was "So Caught Up in You" or "What If I'd Been the One."

Hey, Ed King was a member of the Strawberry Alarm Clock before he joined Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I feel that way about a lot of '80s metal. Sure, the bands looked ridiculous, and quite often indistinguishable from one another. But a lot of the songs from that era, in another setting, would've made great power pop. Seeing Enuff Z'nuff earlier this year, when they opened for Ace Frehley, only confirmed that for me.

Enuff Z'Nuff is power pop in glam metal drag. If they'd come along 10 years earlier, they could've left the hairspray alone.

About 10 years or so ago, several hair metal refugees formed a band called American Heartbreak who tried for a vibe closer to Cheap Trick's harder moments.

Delvin guessed correctly! It was "Caught Up In You." I had never bothered finding out who did that song and never would've guessed .38 Special. It wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Dwight Twilley album.

I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Molly Hatchet. With .38 Special and the Johnny Van Zant Band.
