Nick Lowe Con Los Straitjackets in 2017

I was thrilled to see that Nick Lowe was playing again in my hamlet. It's been five years since my wife and I enjoyed him in concert. Then it was YepRoc's YR15 festival bringing him to our region, so the few hours trip for another gig made good sense. Well, it's five years later, so YepRoc's doing the do for their 20th anniversary. Nick and Los Straitjackets will be there, but LS are also playing with Nick on five dates of his current tour as a nod to their recent Nick Lowe cover album. Once again, the fine folks at YepRoc are working that synergy on a package tour. The last time I saw Los Straitjackets, it was on the "Mondo Zombie Boogaloo" YepRoc package tour with The Fleshtones and Southern Culture On The Skids. From the "hi-concept" Halloween 2013 package album of the same name.

Great, Monk! We saw that pairing a couple years ago at Christmas. Terrific show! Enjoy.

Here is a band that can give you anything live. There's something exciting about the sound of british island pub rock played by landlocked American surf guitarists (and a drummer). However, the possibility of either drowning or suffocating (all those masks!) is very real here.

The band would do well to run everything they play through a country/reggae dub filter (is Sly and Robbie available to tour with the band?) for maximum twenty fist century impact.

If it ain't stiff, it ain't worth a fuck.

Well, the Nick Lowe Quality Rock + Roll Revue on Saturday night was absolutely stellar! Los Straitjackets provided immaculate and sensitive support. Peak moment: on the dreamy "You Inspire Me" from "Dig My Mood" Los Straitjackets made of this the ultimate prom night slow dance number. Incredibly romantic and delicate. The solo that Greg Townson played was impossibly tender. It got applause after eight bars but then went on for a full 16 bars. It got me simultaneously goose-bumped and misty eyed! Much of the show had an Everly Brothers vibe which no doubt pleased Lowe, who had a sold out house this evening on top of the superb accompaniment. Nick Lowe and acoustic guitar is a top flight show, but please don't take what Los Straitjackets can bring to the table for granted. They really did take it to further heights by matching Lowe's restraint and sensitivity every step of the way. Stellar!
