Wreckless Eric!!!!

In two short weeks Wreckless Eric is embarking on a rather odd 4-date US tour and one of his stops will actually be here in the Lou!

I bring this up because it's so rare that St. Louis gets to have the bragging rights of being a tour stop for someone so cool that I just have to take the time to crow about it.

His other stops will be Cleveland, Memphis and Oxford, Mississippi. I have absolutely no idea how this tour got planned.

I expect to spend the next two weeks living in the fear that Eric will wake up and say to himself "What in bloody hell am I doing?," cancel those four dates and just go play a street corner in NYC for four days.

Been a long time since I heard Wreckless Eric. Suggest a few representational tracks.

JOE MEEK!!!

On the second floor of number 304
Above a handbag store and the heavy roar
Of traffic rolling down the Holloway Road
A one time bedroom housed the studio of Joe Meek
Where he conjured with the sound of another world
That Tin Pan Alley thought was too absurd
But miles of wire and recording tape
Brought fortune fame and no escape for Joe Meek
As he stirred up the sound of a hurricane
Joe Meek
Called upon forces from beyond the grave
Joe Meek
Suffered alone for his madness and pain
These were the only rewards that the hit parade
Held in store for Joe Meek
Joe Meek

The talented the hopeful the hopeless
And just plain starstruck
Climbed the stairs up to the birthplace of the hits
In search of three minutes of eternity
In the homemade sound laboratory of Joe Meek
Where he stirred up the sound of a hurricane
Joe Meek
Called upon forces from beyond the grave
Joe Meek
Suffered alone for his madness and pain
These were the only rewards that the hit parade
Held in store for Joe Meek
Joe Meek

a few representational tracks:

"(I'd Go The) Whole Wide World" - power-pop gold. I think the Monkees, no less, covered this one.

"Semaphore Signals" - lo-fi bedroom pop gem

If he plays these in Oxford, Miss., I'm sure all five people in attendence will thoroughly enjoy them.

"Take the Cash" was always a favorite of mine too. That whole "Greatest Stiffs" compilation is all really good stuff.....Yes, the Monkees actually had the good sense to cover "Whole Wide World" on their reunion album in the 80s, also Westerberg played it often during the "14 Songs" tour.

Amy Rigby does a version of that song. I believe she and Marti Jones had Wreckless Eric open for them sometime.
