Talk about a rock star who took care of himself and led a healthy lifestyle! It's nuts, I tell you. What other iconic stars are left to suddenly die this year?

Shocked.

I wasn't a big fan - P-Funk were far more successful at the kind of funk-rock Prince is credited with - but this unquestioningly leaves a huge hole in the music world.

In a weird coincidence, Vanity died earlier this year, also age 57. I hope Morris Day is taking care of himself...

At 57. Unbelievable. I don't own any of his albums, but I do think he's the greatest singles artist since the Beatles. That 3-disc set the Hits is almost pure genius.

Ohhh jeez ... We've all been wondering how many more musical stars we were going to lose in 2016. But I don't think any of us imagined that Prince would be one of them!

Jeez, I don't have words for this. Losing Bowie and Prince, within just a few months? Too much to bear ...

Rest in peace, Your Royal Badness. Thanks for all the remarkable music, and those unforgettable concerts.

Yeah, what's up with this year?! Was the Grim Reaper not meeting his quota or sumthin?

The last Rock Star Holocaust of this magnitude was probably the '70/'71 rockers-named-'J' event of Janis, Jimi, Jim Morrison (was Jones, Brian around this time?) But those deaths were not clustered as tightly I don't think, more spread out over a year or so.

Brian's death was first, in 1969. Janis and Jimi died within less than three weeks of each other, in 1970. Jim Morrison died the following year.

They're going out in twos. So far this year:

- Prince, and Vanity

- Bowie, and his drummer (name escapes me)

- 2 founders of Jefferson Airplane...on the same day.

Glenn Frey, and ... well, how about it? Will Mojo Nixon finally be vindicated?

Prince, nothing compares to U.
RIP.

He only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain.

Bowie and Prince ... gone just like that? What an all-round dreadful year this has been!

...

RIP.

...

57 is WAY too young to die.

Between Prince and MJ, I'm starting to think that Madonna should start looking over her shoulder....

Unbelievable!
The magnitude!
I imagined a world without Paul and Ringo more readily than a world without Prince.
But think of the ripples to come, as ten thousand kids delve into to the deep cuts of Bowie and Prince over the next year.
Surely we will have greater blessings than loss!

Not to mention a crap ton of previously unreleased from the serial recorder that was Prince. And I bet most of it will be of a much higher quality than most musicians' B material.

Ohhh man, that's going to be fascinating to watch. Surely the floodgates will open -- how wide will depend on his executor, whoever that person or entity might turn out to be.

But yeah, is it going to be a well-curated, thoughtful program of releases, like Hendrix's catalog since his family got the rights back?

Or will the works be steadily compromised by producers who want to tinker, as Hendrix's posthumous releases became under Jack Douglas?

Or will the estate just release any shit to make a buck, as RCA did with Elvis?

Given that Prince himself was reticent to release DLX RMs of his crucial back catalog, it will be interesting to see if the likes of a full on 3-4 disc version of "Purple Rain" with everything but the kitchen sink will now be issued. A glance at the Prince forum reveals much wailing and gnashing of teeth over the years. With the B-sides and 12" mixes plus the iceberg below the sea that was his archives, there could be years and years worth of viable music to curate. I always thought that I would be a good editor for such a project. I'm enough of a Prince fan to be into it, but not so much that I'd be sycophantic or fail to call BS on material that should stay unreleased. Warner Brothers? I'm available.

No, it'll be similar to the embalming and mutilating process that George Lucas had with Star Wars.

Ohhh my gosh, I can just hear it ... except, instead of the 2,000 or so repeats of "Well," it'll be a thousand admonishments to put the cell phones down.
