I thought "Families" was uncanningly Sprinsteenian. I heard first seven or so songs earlier this morning and thought some of it was ok, but a lot a bit tedious. The problem with these protest records, like the last Steve Earle album, is that the musicians sacrifice craftsmanship for urgency - when Neil writes three songs in one day, you can guarantee that they won't all be classics.

"still sounds better than a speech by rumsfield"

I dunno - has Neil ever written any lyrics this weirdly brilliant?

As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

OR

I think what you'll find,
I think what you'll find is,
Whatever it is we do substantively,
There will be near-perfect clarity
As to what it is.

And it will be known,
And it will be known to the Congress,
And it will be known to you,
Probably before we decide it,
But it will be known.

Great album - Neil's best in ages, and after hearing one of his other topical tunes "Let's Roll," a few years ago I feared the worst.

But I can't help but lovin' that Crazy Horse craziness.
