Trifectas

Okay, I got to thinking about great trilogies in Rock history and so, consequently, that meant another list. The definition of "trilogy" here are three consecutive albums of new material by an artist. Thus, live albums of previously released material would not count towards or against the trilogy (i.e. Budokan, Live At Leeds, etc.).

My rankings, although I'm sure there will be some bones of contention here with respect to both rank and omissions.

But if it's consecutive albums, where's The Jam's This Is The Modern World which falls between In The City and All Mod Cons?

If I could have counted Terminal Tower/Modern Dance/Dub Housing they would have most likely made the list but Terminal Tower is not so much a "real" LP as it is a collection of non LP tracks (although brilliant) so...

Modern Dance/Dub Housing/New Picnic Time doesn't cut it for me personally because New Picnic Time is way too pretentiously arty for me. Just my opinion --- some may enjoy that type of noodling but not me so it's purely subjective.

However, you bring to my attention my flagrant omission of Terminal Tower in my best "non-proper" LPs list in another thread. Surely a top ten or top five LP in that category.

Oops, my mistake. I'll substitute with All Mod Cons/Setting Sons/Sound Affects.

I always thought the great 3 album stretch for the Beatles was Help!/Rubber Soul/Revolver - I know that contradicts all established critical reasoning, but I never dug the records post-Revolver, they lose the charm for me (stunning parts on the White Album, but don't really enjoy it as a whole).....My top 50 would include Graham Parker (first 4), Comsat Angels (first 3), and X (first 3).

Mas84: I agree w/you on the Beatles Help/Rubber Soul/Revolver, but do you mean the US or UK versions? Also, for the Kinks, I would put Face to Face/Something Else/VGPS

UK editions of the Beatles will do the job for the purposes of this thread, although I do prefer the US edition of "Rubber Soul" slightly.

For some reason "I've Just Seen A Face" sounds like it makes sense on that album and "Nowhere Man" doesn't - but the UK version of "Help!" kills the US one, and "Revolver" is definitive in the UK version to me.

One of my earliest memories was the Christmas of '65 when my sister received Rubber Soul as a present. I just got the new Capitol Years Vol 2 box set & it was funny reading the liner notes trying to rationalize the reason why Capitol scrambed the track listing of the Beatles albums in the U.S.

Wow - and I thought I'd be the only one to rank the Armed Forces/Get Happy!!/Trust trilogy higher than My Aim Is True/This Year's Model/Armed Forces one. No argument here with the Stevie Wonder trilogy listed. I figured I'd get some Captain votes which reminds me a couple of other solid trilogies: Tago Mago/Ege Bamyasi/Future Days and Radio Activity/Trans Europe Express/Man Machine.
