pazz & jop

i spent nearly eight hours today sifting through ballots going back to 2008. the mike azzerad (thanks for FABULON mike!) john young and david fricke (one of many trilogy groups all going at once @ tp) mentionables stood out.

i really enjoyed the RUBY SUNS album and the first track (more like the first thirty seconds) of DAVID FRICKE's #10 pick SWORD. i loved most of the RAMBLING STRIPS (devonshire) record.

glenn mcdonald does a statistical calculation of the Pazz & Job balloting that is really fascinating, scoring reviewers and records by "enthusiasm," "hipness," "kvtosis," "singularity," "centricity" and other ranking. Some of them are self-evident (a "centric" voter would have top ten picks that exemplify the cumulative top ten records) and some hilariously obscure ("metalism" scores how any voter ranks in percentage of songs and records defined as "metal"). It's all driven by the calculations of the P&J data sets, which they have now officially endorsed.

I'm not above raking through trash piles in order to uncover a gem but damn; they're doesn't seem to be a full albums worth of anything out there (however, the empty hearts were a nice exception). So, I must tell you now that I am full on frustrated, dismayed and exhausted in my search for:

brilliant jangle pop (blow pops), fun garage rock (smugglers/break up society) lively ska (bad manners/toasters), independent latino (café tacuba), or intelligent and brash (fratellis/fletchert pratt/dirty pretty things) rock and an all round power pop masterpiece (bigger lovers) of late.
Or is that too much to ask?

I welcome any and all suggestions.

This guy covers power pop so thoroughly its pretty amazing. He doesn't update it alot but if you go through the blog's history you'll surely find something loud and fast with alot of heart.
