50 forgotten 90s bands...

...according to the NME, which explains why American classic/alternative rock staples Stone Temple Pilots and Gin Blossoms are considered "forgotten."

I've heard a bunch of these (as has everyone here), heard of a bunch more and never heard of some. Checking out My Drug Hell right now.

The article.

Dammit, the link didn't post. Trying again.

Nope. The <a> function doesn't appear to be working. Here's the long-ass URL for cutting and pasting.

That's a really inefficient way to say "American." Well, actually a lot of Britpop also-rans, but the American bands maintained a pretty high profile over here.

Curve has quite a 'cult following' (for lack of a better word) on both sides of the pond. Not forgotten YET for them.

The only group on this list that I listen to even semi-regularly is Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. I haven't heard of half of them.

Most of the North American bands on that list have been, IMO, quite justifiably forgotten. Most of the UK acts are mysteries to me, but I intend to check 'em out. I counted at least ten of 'em who've landed on my radio setlists, thanks largely to Rhino's Brit Box.

Man, Idlewild was really really good for a few years there. And then, as the article says, got very bland very fast. I think the singer didn't really like rocking out, because he always seemed a little uncomfortable live, and first chance he could he put out a bland folksy solo album.

I saw Idlewild at SXSW around the time of their...second album? The one with "Roseability" and "These Wooden Ideas" on it. They were really good that night. I used to have the album, but I never heard any of their others.

:::shudder:::

Geneva. I recall that there was at least one halfway decent tune on the debut CD. Nothing to write home about ... and I got the disc for free.

Saw Curve open for The Jesus And Mary Chain. Good show, but anyone who names a record "Pubic Fruit" deserves to get beat within an inch of their lives.

Belly got quite a lot of play in my circle of friends back at the time. You can get their albums in the $0.99 bin these days. Can you say "overstocked?"

...

That's a pretty dismal list.

I got a sealed copy of Belly's STAR in 1999 for 2.99.
Worth it for "Feed The Tree" plus the next best song: whatever it may have been.
Helium is my favorite of forgotten bands, though Timony's MOUNTAINS is the best of her work before WILD FLAG.

Hey, anybody remember Aldo Nova? Can you tell me where he's gone?

Last I heard he moved into production and writing for other Canadian artists - I believe Celine Dion is one of his regular clients.

I've always dug "Fantasy," as ridiculous as it is. I've never heard another note he's played or recorded, though.

the church-metropolis (bloody ripper single that: jay dee daughtery-drums)
tall dwarfs- on homestead records
jean paul sartre expereience- bleeding star
straightjacket fits-melt

I snagged by cassette of "Vehicle" for one thin dime. Perhaps I've mentioned that before?

No matter. I'm still more than happy to dwell on the particulars with senile rapture.

The best forgotten '90s bands are Rollerskate Skinny and their offspring, Kid Silver. Horsedrawn Wishes and Dead City Sunbeams are the best albums from that decade to only have been heard by about 13 people each.

I heard he's forming a super-group with Einar Orn.

...

It's probably not true.

Wikipedia says he's in Vancouver, blowing sailors for spare change and candy bars.

It's probably not true, but it's more plausible than the supergroup-with-Einar-Örn theory.

Now we know who's been editing Nova's wiki page...

Rollerskate Skinny had to be known first to be forgotten.

Unrest (big deal for a short time - the players are remembered more than the music)
Strapping Fieldhands (critic darlings forgotten)
Soul Asylum (Hang Time, one of greatest LPs, is still the worst seller in their catalog; 80s album but 90s band)
Pale Saints (shoegaze forgotten in the US by fans but certainly not bands)
Jesus Jones (seems like somebody that would be remembered more)
#1 Cup (Possum Trot Plan, indie classic)
Ned's Atomic (they still play occasionally; grebo is due for nostalgia blowup)
Lush (should be revered like placemats or stooges)
King Missile (I totally respect Weird Al, but...)

I could be mistaken, but Jesus Jones' "Right Here Right Now" was actually licensed as the lead-in to the evening news in several markets. Which means they're not entirely forgotten by the suits who buy the teleprompters and makeup for the anchors on TV.
Re: 50 forgotten 90s bands...

That makes sense. And it's probably still played in some radio markets, too, and movie soundtracks.

I was thinking of the deeper cuts, the band as a whole, seems like should be remembered more, rather than the one hit wonder remembrance. But that would really be a different category. (One hit wonders that really aren't, like DeVo).
