I went and saw Morrissey at the Boston Opera House on Saturday with my lady. It was her birthday and what she wanted to do to...um...celebrate. She was worried for weeks that Morrissey would cancel the tour like he usually does, before it reached Boston, and would ruin her birthday. (I personally have had Morrissey stop a show after 3 songs because of a tickle in his throat.) It didn't look good early on in the tour when Morrissey had that horrific incident where he refused to play at the same/time venue as We Are Scientists. Things also looked ominous when he booted opening act Kristen Young off the tour. Despite these unfortunate happenings, the show still seemed to be on when Saturday rolled around.

We ate at a nice restaurant beforehand. The waiter asked if we had an engagement at the Opera House. When we said "Yes", he then wished my gf a "very unhappy birthday." (A nice Strangeaways reference.) I was reluctant to order any kind of meat dish, thinking that somehow Morrissey would be able to detect it on me, even from our nosebleed seats, and use it as an excuse to cancel the show. I settled for fish. The thinking was: of course, eating fish is evil, but perhaps not worth Moz having me kicked out of the arena. We went to the show. Lots and lots of aging hipsters wearing embarrassing Smiths/Morrissey tee shirts from yesteryear. We passed the PETA merch table on our way to our seats. Since there was no opening act, we were subjected to a video montage of chickens being slaughtered on an industrial assembly line, and pigs choking on their own blood. Par for the course. However, we also got a few cool Ramones and New York Dolls clips sprinkled in there also.

The show itself was good, not great. I still think he has it as a performer. The set list was light on hits from either the Smiths or his early solo career. The new songs all seemed to have baroque arrangements and the lyrics not quite as sharp as his usual. (Kick The Bride Down The Aisle is the best of the lot in my opinion). Really, no classic songs at all from his solo period 1988-2000. Banter was occasionally humourous. He made some inexplicable Golden Girls references. After singing a song about the ghetto, he said "I know Boston doesn't have any ghettos, but use your imagination." A few other curmudgeonly utterances made me smile.

Anyway, we enjoyed the 90 minute set which culminated in an extended Meat Is Murder with Moz curled up on the ground in a fetal position while the audience watched more videos of industrial chicken slaughter. Only later did we find that he collapsed after the show and had to be rushed to Mass General hospital. He then publicly blames Kristen Young for giving him the cold/virus/disease, and cancels the rest of the tour. The man is coming more and more unhinged every year it seems, but we thank him for having the decency to only cancel the tour after his Boston appearance. It meant a lot to my sweetheart.

I saw Morrissey in late 2012 in Albany ... my impression was the same: good not great. There was little spark, like he was very proficiently going through the motions. The band was tight, but not very powerful or surprising.

PETA was there, of course.

He postponed/cancelled my show 3 times over the past couple of years. After refusing to take the bait yet again, I was GIVEN a (really good) ticket for the 4th engagement. He cancelled.

The last big show I went to was Springsteen & the E Street Band at one of those cavernous amphitheaters on April 26 of this year. In addition to playing 3 hours of weird. wild stuff (opened with a cover of "Clampdown," closed with a cover of "Highway to Hell"), the 64-year old Springsteen managed to sing and play guitar with what appeared to be a 9- or 10-year old girl ON HIS SHOULDERS for the latter half of encore standard "Dancing in the Dark"...
