R.I.P. Nash the Slash

The news media (so far) has no details about how he died, but the essay on his web site comes across like a suicide note. Or at least like the writing of someone who knows the end is near.

Ah man. Sorry to hear this.

This sucks. I have a couple of his solo CDs, which are nicely weird. Plus FM's Black Noise, which I can't imagine too many folks on this board would like, but the melodic prog/pop blend of which I've always dug.

That letter was his retirement notice. Though, given that there've been no details of his death as of yet, I too wonder if he knew he wouldn't make it much longer. I don't read it as a suicide note, but I wonder if he was ill. 66 is too young to just expire.

Ah! The holy "Black Noise!" The brilliant last gasp of prog! It was the first album I ever bought after getting my first stereo since I'd heard "Phasors On Stun" and "Journey" on my local FM ROCK station after ditching top 40 and liked what I'd heard. I've absolutely loved that album for the entirety of its existence, and it clued me in to what a mad genius Nash was, since the post-Nash FM album I bought, was pretty turgid and forgettable. If all prog was as good as "Black Nose," we might not have needed New Wave so badly ca. 1978. I enjoy his star turns and solo works over the years, but I always have "Black Noise" on heavy rotation in my mental playlist. It's a brilliant album with no lead guitar. R.I.P., Nash. I was sad to see his retirement note at his website a while back but intrigued to see that he'd come out at the tail end of his career. Who knew?
