R.I.P. Gabriel Garcia Marquez

N.Y. Times obituary

I would have guessed he was dead already, but I would have been wrong.

I only ever read "One Hundred Years of Solitude," and it was magnificent.

If any man received the Nobel for just one book, Marquez was it. I did read some of his other things, like "Love in the Time of Cholera" - good stuff, but "100 Years" is the obvious masterpiece.

The same could be said of a good portion of writers that are worshipped (ie,
having a standalone masterpiece) ... Melville included.

The Autumn of the Patriarch is a tough read at times but an outstanding book, better than 100 Years in my view. The later novels are a bit too much of a rehash of the lesser parts of 100 Years, but GGM's Bolivar novel is excellent (The General in his Labyrinth).
