And speaking of recent must-see concert experiences...

...I saw Johnny Marr yesterday afternoon (!?!) at Fun Fun Fun Fest. And he was freaking awesome, playing the best of his recent excellent solo record and some choice Smiths tunes. A rock star in the very best sense of the term. If you get a chance to see him in your town, go - go!

Michael Toland - We are in danger of logrolling here. Mr. Marr is next on my concert agenda for Nov. 20 at The Orange Peel. A show I don't have to travel to for a change, not that I'm complaining. Rocktober has been extended and deeply rich this year in particular. Thanks for the tip even though I was planning on attending.

For further rumination on the Fresh New Sound of Yesterday®

Prompted by these posts, I've been listening to Marr's solo album over the past week. Very good, with loads of the guitar goodness you'd expect and hope to hear. He's also a much better singer that I would have imagined.

It got me thinking that had 20 years ago, had he begun recording true solo albums rather than join other groups, we could have 6-7 albums of this quality music. Too bad for us.

Zoo - I kind of like that Marr did serious stints in The The and Electronic as well as playing with everyone else under the sun. It was a less obvious path to take. And he is a good singer. I wonder what songs besides the album cuts await me next week. I was never a Smiths fan, so I'm ambivalent on that front. I would be more than interested in his interpretations of Electronic material though!

Question answered! He did an extended version of "Getting Away With It" re-arranged for guitars only that was a treat. With his Mancunian accent, he sounded only a hair's breadth away from Bernard Sumner, really. Great sharp show, with 90% of the new album played and lots of Smiths tunes [some of which I did not recognize] filling the breach. Wildcard was a cover of "I Fought The Law" Clash style.
