No shame there. I like it a lot, too, though I honestly don't quite savvy why it's gotten such universal buzz - nearly every musical outlet is raving about them, from alt-rock outlets to mainstream rags.
It's a very well done and accomplished chunk of pop music, but I don't hear much on it that seems remarkable enough about it to explain all the ecstatic hosannas being hurled at it - most of it just kind of reminds me of a slightly bloodless version of Tegan and Sara. So far only the title track has really wowed me as being truly special - it sounds like if ABBA had lasted long enough to be influenced by Talking Heads'
Speaking in Tongues, which is definitely a pretty great thing in my book. But nothing else on it stands out as being as quirky or unique as that track.
My theory is that it's the first thing that's come around in a while that feels like it could be a massive mainstream hit while still feeling like the product of actual human beings and not a marketing committee. (There was that brief Gotye episode last year - say what you will about him, he did at least seem to be a human being and not a pop robot from some Swedish laboratory - but he had no staying power.) I think that's caused the music press to get a little funny in the head regarding them.
Having a group with some talent and vision and sense of history to talk about for a bit instead of Miley Cyrus would be enough to make any rational person a bit giddy and want to give Haim any boost within their power to make them huge. It's been way too long since there's been anyone who seems to have a shot at being big deals in the mainstream that has felt at all worth rooting for.
