Skeeviest Top 20 Song of the 70s

I've got it narrowed down to either "Chevy Van," in which Sammy Johns takes advantage of a ditzy hippie hitchhiker then dumps her off in a town with a dirt main street (implying that the poor thing is likely impoverished and uneducated), or "You've Never Been This Far Before," in which date-rapist Conway Twitty cajoles a reluctant virgin into giving it up.

I was gonna nominate "Undercover Angel," which is supposedly about whacking it to a Farrah Fawcett poster, but yours have that one beat. I can't tell you how much I loathe "Undercover Angel," though. I just assumed "Chevy Van" was just smarmy - not out-and-out sleazy.

The one that immedately comes to mind is Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night" about, again, the protagonist getting a virgin to do the deed.

And any number of songs by The Tubes, which were no doubt written with tongue firmly planted in cheek, but are quite skeevy nonetheless:

Rod wins, since the man has been loathsome personified since right around the time of "Hot Legs." His raspy drawl is repellent in the extreme but the lyrics to this one manage to leave him in the shade...

But wait! I just remembered "My Sharona" wins for skeeve factor hands down! At the time, I just thought it was a repulsively smarmy piece of rock cynicism. It wasn't until Doug Fieger died a few years back that I discovered that "My Sharona" wasn't just a repugnant fantasy; Fieger actually did leave his [presumably adult] girlfriend for the eponymous Sharona of the song - a girl still in high school. Who was photographed for the extremely skeevy picture sleeve of same. Then when I heard the song again at the gym, I actually followed the lyrics…

But "My Sharona" has an absolutely ripping extended guitar solo, so for the sake of its instrumental merits, I have to ignore the lyrics.

Joe Pernice's cover of "Chevy Van" introduced me to that particularly loathsome piece of loucheness. Icky.

Parliament - "My Automobile" has always bugged me. Very catchy song but it's about George Clinton giving a girl a ride home but then he dumps her off in the middle of nowhere when she won't give in to his advances. What makes it worse you hear this conversation between him and the girl and then she starts crying because he's going to do it.

He gets beaten up and thrown in jail in "Little Ole Country Boy" so maybe one can take some satisfaction in that.

I guess Dave Thomas was right. "Musicians Are Scum."

Isn't "Escape (The Pina Coloda Song)" about some already-together-but-both-seeking-to-cheat-on-each-other couple who meet while seeking other lovers via the personal ads?

The lyrics are written in the language of Rupert Holmes ... which I will not utter here.

Read them for yourself and tell that that they aren't at all skeevy.

Also, there's a Lynyrd Skynyrd tune about nailing anonymous groupies and hoping that they're available the next time you happen to cruise through town that seems rather reprehensible.

The venerable Lou Reed had a few skeevy songs in the 70's; one that I particularly remember was "I Want To Boogie With You."
