'Blues Brothers' Called Best Soundtrack

LONDON (AP) - "The Blues Brothers" was rated the best movie
soundtrack in a British straw vote. It nipped the soundtracks of
"Pulp Fiction" and "Trainspotting" in a vote conducted for British
Broadcasting Corp. digital radio.
"It's a 'Sound of Music' for hipsters, a film that lives and
breathes music," said Andrew Collins, who drew 10,000 voters for his
survey.
The stars of the 1980 film, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, sang
several of the songs including "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love"
and the theme from "Rawhide." Guest appearances included Ray Charles
in "Shake Your Tailfeather," James Brown in "The Old Landmark,"
Aretha Franklin in "Think" and Cab Calloway with "Minnie the
Moocher."
Not one of the top 10 in the BBC vote placed in a similar survey
done three years ago by British radio station Classic FM, in which
"Star Wars" came in first, followed by "Gone With the Wind" and
"Lawrence of Arabia."
The BBC vote for best film soundtrack: 1. "The Blues Brothers," 2.
"Pulp Fiction," 3. "Trainspotting," 4. "Saturday Night Fever," 5.
"Dirty Dancing," 6. "Grosse Point Blank," 7. "Kill Bill" Vols. 1 and
2, 8. (tie) "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Lost in Translation" and 10.
"Fight Club."

i love little british people as much as anybody, but that list-- complied by 23 year olds?--is dumb, dumber, and dumbest. it makes pitchfork's top 100 of 1970's seem savvy. and movie with dan ackroyd is automatically out of any positive competion. Most overrated and unfunny comic "star" since lucille ball.

Without thinking, and with the Pagans on headphones, and without much sunlight:

Manhattan
Superfly
Graduate
ALL Astaire/Rogers/Porter films (7?)
Rushmore
Alfie
Man With the Golden Arm
Witness for the Prosecution
Hard Day's Night
Purple Rain duh!!
the beach/ski movie that james brown was in
Nino Rota's Amarcord (the best orig?)
Rozsa's Ben-Hur
Herrman's Vertigo
Korngold's The Sea Wolf

And the Winner?

from a musician friend

Best sdtks:

1. RUSHMORE (brilliantly evocative collection of
songs, which totally works for independant listening).

2. PULP FICTION (reintroduced several genres of pop
back into the mainstream, while serving as a totallt
subversive soundtrack to the film)

3. THE THIN RED LINE (maybe the most purely beautiful
and meditative orchestral score of the last ten years)

4. VERTIGO (DB's right on this one)

5. TAXI DRIVER (Herrmann's last stand, still the ne
plus ultra in film noir music)

6. Ennio Morricone: THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY
(need I say more?)

7. Georges Delerue: JULES ET JIM (simutaneously light
and sad)

8. THE HARDER THEY COME (Jah say: Uh Huh)

9. Prokofiev: ALEXANDER NEVSKY (Fantastic, and raising
the bar a bit on you philistines!)

AND FINALLY -

My personal All-Time Fave:

10. Elmer Bernstein/Chico Hamilton: SWEET SMELL OF
SUCCESS (the epitome of "crime jazz", coupled with
blazing orchestral work and Chico's West Coast vibe.
Amazingly, not available on cd....

Michaels list reveals what would happen if people took the list topic seriously/literally rather than as a compilation with a movie title attached.
As for the BBC poll, what horrors would result if you asked the readers of, say, PEOPLE magazine to peruse their album collection and vote on the best albums that were somehow associated with the movie industry?
