Yeah, yeah, I know, but it'll be worth it

Has anyone gone to see a band they didn't really care about, just because of one member?

A buddy of mine wanted to see Deep Purple a few years ago, when they came through Denver. The biggest reason he gave was because Steve Morse was (and still is) the guitarist, and "Morse is a bad-ass." I was never a huge fan, but I did see Morse in the early '80s with Dixie Dregs, and yeah, he's a great guitarist. Besides, it's good to keep ranks with your close concert pals, because what goes around comes around. So I went. Turned out to be a really good show.

The thread about Har Mar Superstar touring with The Replacements made me think of this. I guess this is the opposite side of the coin.

Late '80s, me and a friend saw a band called...um...(looks 'em up on TP)...oh yeah, Blue Ruin, cuz they had a former Birthday Party member. I have zero recollection of the show or their music. At least it wasn't awful, or I would have remembered that.

The Box Tops...on a bill with Lesley Gore and the Association. Definitely was there to see one member. 2002.

Does going to see Wilco just to see Nels Cline count?

Blue Ruin put out a pretty cool album but it did contain a little padding. Bad Gin's a huge song. I went and saw them, however and they got blown away by opening act, Rabbit's Wedding.

I don't know if I've done this myself, but I remember going to see Peter Gabriel on the Us tour, and running into a guy I knew on the Metrorail on the way to the Miami Arena. He told me and my friend that he was only going to see Shankar on violin.

I may have not gone to certain concerts only to see one particular band member; however, the presence of certain members has definitely made it more enticing. For example, Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), Steve Howe and Bill Bruford (Yes), Adrian Belew (Bowie), John McGeoch (PIL), and Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting).

I like the New Pornographers just fine, but don't know if I'd ever bother going to see them when Neko Case isn't touring with them.

I've seen them twice with her and once without, though that was unintentional. She was supposed to be with them the last time they came to town, but she hurt her foot or leg or something and bowed out of the tour right before they got to the Lou. It was still a great show, but I was bummed nonetheless.

I also went to a rave once, something I had absolutely no interest in doing, just because DJ Rap was one of the guest djs. She spun records for about 15 minutes, not a single one of which I could differentiate from any of the others, though each change was greeted ecstatically by the crowd. Then she bounded off the stage and made a beeline for the exit. As did I.

It's what we call jazz.

As did I.
Sounds like you weren't rolling. Which would be problematic in said situation.
