Strange Bedfellows

I was thinking this morning about the day in 1982 when I bought my first copy of Joy Division Closer and recalled that I bought Haircut 100 Pelican West at the same time. It strikes me now that that was an odd twofer to pick up at the same time.

Other combinations of albums I remember buying in combinations that really had no business sharing the same shopping bag:

Prince - Graffiti Bridge/Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual

Uncle Tupelo - No Depression/Lightning Seeds - Cloudcuckooland

Buggles - The Age of Plastic/Talking Heads - Remain in Light

The Brains - Electronic Eden/Dire Straits - Making Movies

I was in a thrift store recently buying the usual stuff you'd expect: jazz/lounge singers, organ and chacha records, a polka album (hey, it had a version of "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny etc Bikini," I had to get it), and to my surprise there was an album from the '80s by a flautist covering Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Gotta be the first time Reich shared a bag with Frankie Yankovic.

This is every time I go to a record store.

I picked these two up at Wax Trax -- the hip music store in Denver at the time -- to see if the staff would react at all to the juxtaposition. The clerk didn't bat an eye.

The first 2 CDs I bought at the late Ruthless Records of Athens, GA:
Abbey Road – The Beatles
Candleland – Ian McCulloch

Um, wait, that one doesn't work.

I seem to recall going to pick up DJ Shadow's Endtroducing and noticing Wilco's Being There was a couple of rows over...that was a good day.

black flag- wasted. bruce springsteen- the river kurtis blow- the breaks

I guess these guys thought so, too. (I may have to hunt down some of their music!)

So did these folks, although looking at the pictures, I'm kind of dubious on their whole concept.

And there are at least three bands on MySpace that use the name.

I used to love the dada/street theatre aspect of these things - though less so than some friends, particualrly in the skate/mohawk days

Closest I can come to said story:
walking up to a counter with a small pile of evangelical/eschatalogical/dispensationalist stuff and another of hardcore porn. It did provoke.
"Sorry. Seem to have forgot my credit card."

Ha ha! It surprises me to realize I never did that. It sounds like something my younger, more obnoxious self would've done.

Truthfully, it wasn't so expensive to me; I really did want both those albums.
