The Addams Family gets points just for being the live action rendering of Charles Addams' comic strip characters. It had more clever details than the Munsters. The title song introduced the appropriate adjective "ookie." As 11-year-old I was very taken with Carolyn Jones, although I couldn't put my finger on why, exactly.

On the other hand (show), the wonderful silliness of Fred Gwynne cannot be discounted. I love Al Lewis. And I think my pop got a little work from them; he sold them a script before they went off the air.

I always liked The Addams Family more, probably because of the missus but that car and the theme sure evens it up some.

Addams Family had one heck of a good pinball game, that's for sure. Munsters, I doubt it.

I believe that Joe "King" Carrasco named the Munsters theme as one of the greatest songs ever in the pages of TP. It was in the article about whichever Stiff tour he took part in.

One of the biggest problems with Bewitched was the leap of faith needed to buy Darrin as being so innately wonderful as to have attracted and held onto the likes of Samantha. It was easier to go along with it when I was a child, but even then I was a little jealous of that gasbag.

Ah, I know what this is really about. Class war. Addams being white collar upper class and Munsters being blue collar lower. Well, if obtaining the finer things in life without having to work too hard to afford them makes me root for the Addams, FINE! The mewling working classes are too godamn sensitive anyway.

Boy O Boy, a ska band from Virginia (who later renamed themselves Fighting Gravity), recorded a great version of the Munsters theme too. I tried to find it on YouTube or someplace, but no luck.

The Specials used the theme song to good effect in their tune "Bonediggin'" as well.

Okay, but how about something with real social relevance - Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and what they say about the role of women in society?

Bewitched: an adman - a liar and manipulator by trade - fears his wife's innate power and ability to such a degree that he forbids her to ever use her natural abilities, despite the fact that she has never demonstrated herself to be anything other than intelligent, sensible and responsible, and a far more mature individual than himself.

I Dream of Jeannie: an astronaut - the pinnacle of human (therefore, male) evolution in the mindset of the 60s - releases the full power of the female on the world, and then must constantly battle the resulting chaos and unpredictability that he unleashed and can often only fix the damage done by the woman by stuffing her back in her bottle until he sorts things out. But he DOES always let her back out, and eventually comes to accept her enough to marry her.

In the universes of their own shows, Tony Nelson is a far, far better man than Darren Stevens. Darren is just an insecure goon who's so wigged out by his wife Samantha's potential that he tries his best to make sure she never reaches it, despite the fact that she never once shows any tendency towards misusing that potential.

Tony Nelson, on the other hand, is totally justified in his actions, because Jeannie is a chaotic force of nature who, through her lack of understanding of how the world works and her impulsive nature, threatens to cause disasters at any moment. So Tony is just being responsible - there's never any indication that he would try to shut down someone like Samantha Stevens, who is intelligent and stable. Jeannie, though, needs to be controlled for everyone's own good.

In the wider universe, however, Bewitched is the more honorable show. It showed the 1960s audience that women were intelligent, talented and responsible and had much to contribute to society if the patriarchy would just quit holding them back. On the other hand, I Dream of Jeannie showed that yes, women are powerful, but they're also unpredictable and emotional and if you set them free without male supervision they'll wreck all of the greatest achievements that modern man has toiled to create.

So Bewitched wins for having the more positive social message. But I'd still rather watch I Dream of Jeannie because I can't watch Bewitched without wanting to punch that dipshit Darren in the face every time he insists Samantha waste hours cooking a dinner she could conjure up with the twitch of her nose. What a putz.

Remember Bill Daily's character on I Dream of Jeannie -- Major Healey, Tony's horndog buddy? Jeez, imagine if it'd been him who found & opened that bedazzled bottle on the beach. He would've snuck that bottle home, retired his commission and spent the rest of his life holed up with Jeannie! You sure couldn't have made a show out of it -- well, not on network TV anyway. She had much more fun with Tony Nelson.
