Support bands blow away the headliners

Saw Hank Rollins do one of those spoken word things a while back and he was talking about how when he was a kiddie, he went to see Ted Nugent at some big outdoor arena show and how Ted was totally blown offstage by (then) unknown support band, Van Halen and how when Ted came on stage clearly pissed off, the entire crowd was scared of him, even Henry.
Except when it happens to one's self, I'm a big fan of seeing the support band upstage the headliner and was wondering if any of you folks had experienced anything of this ilk.

The couple that come to mind for myself are.

Violent Femmes - Blown away by Painters and Dockers
The Stranglers - Blown away by Hunter and Collectors
Gotta watch out for those "and" bands.

As you know, this is the reason you don't let your support act use your drum riser, your mixing board, your PA levels, etc. This gives the average concert-goer the "correct" impression. Bet it doesn't fool trouserians, eh?

In the inverse equation, I enjoyed seeing headliner Neil Young obliterate the pathetic exertions of sonic youth at m2g with one les paul powerchord

doesn't really suit this thread cuz it was too close to call a winner, but the hank mention reminded me...
