What - no one I've ever heard of?

Actually, I do know a handful of those bands, but not many. Are they mostly Twin Cities locals or something?

john kastner was in the asexuals and doughboys.
nick royale is in the hellacopters and has done a few side projects with scot morgan.
i believe alien crime syndicate was the band that opened for and backed up tommy stinson on the tour to support that crappy solo album of his.
drag the river is the current band of one of those old all (descendents minus milo, remember, hehe) singers.
stringfellow is, of course, a posie.

i'm assuming leatherface, supersuckers and polonsky are the others you've heard of. can't tell ya anything about the four others, but i'm betting they're not from mpls either. and i'm betting i won't be buying a copy...

Was wondering what happened to Jonny Polonsky ! I strongly recommend his "My Name is Jonny" to all devotees of J. Richman......Interesting that there are 2 songs that were on the "unreleased" tracks from the Sire 2 disc compilation (Portland, Birthday Gal)....Track I'd like to see on here: Iggy & The (Reformed) Stooges taking a shot at "Raised in the City".....

I'd like to hear:

Tony Bennett "Nightclub Jitters"
Paul Anka "Androgynous"

Leatherface are one of the best punk bands of the last 15 or so years, no joke. I'd buy just on their participation. FWIW.

Drag the River are a great roots-rock, alt-cunt act. Neal Casal is a kind of bland alt-cunt singer-songwriter who's been playing some great Stonesy guitar in Ryan Adams band recently. This seems in the same spirit as the Big Star tribute that came out in 2001 (not the never-to-be-released Jody Stephens-approved one, the one that came out on a teeny NYC label)--not a lot of big names, but hopefully done in the right spirit.

mats'84 - Don't know if you're aware, several years removed from Hi My Name Is Jonny and There Is Something Wrong With You, Polonsky returned with Power Of Sound in 2004. Not bad but I believe both Hi and Something Wrong are much better efforts.

Neal Casal is folksy, has three or four cd's out already. I've met him a few times....comes in our record store. Drag the River has a few cd's and 7" out there, but overall the comp sounds kind of bland.

Leatherface ... great choice ...

What would be truly great is if Paul, Chris, Tommy and Slim got together secretly under a different name and covered one of their own songs for the tribute disc. They could call themselves Bobless or something ...

I would have loved to see tracks by:

Young Fresh Fellows ("Talent Show")
Briefs ("Customer")
Jonathan Richman ("Waitress in the Sky")
Willie Nelson ("Skyway")
Motorhead ("Beer for Breakfast")
Paul Anka is a great choice for "Androgynous," but how about Cat Power?
AC/DC ("Dose of Thunder" -- not sure about this one)
New Pornographers ("Can't Hardly Wait" or "I'll Be You")
Dirtbombs ("I Don't Know")
U2 ("Never Mind" -- I'm not a fan, but I think this would actually sound good)
Belle and Sebastian ("Color Me Impressed" -- I think they might pull it off)

I always thought The Clash could have done a great version of "Bastards of Young" ...

Or
Bob Mould doing ' Something to Du"?
Or
Alex Chilton doing " Alex Chilton"?

i always liked the mats cover of another girl another planet, worth finding

Except the Rutles.
