The Dils "I Hate The Rich" on 'Gossip Girl'!

My wife's fave new Netflix discovery. Hadn't watched it much, but when I found out that one episode was set in LA in the '80s, well, even I had to check it out. Nice to hear Freurs' "Doot Doot" in there, too, amongst the usual suspects (Adam The Ants, "Blue Monday", Depeche Mode, etc.) Must have cost a bundle to get all the rights.

The Dils. On prime-time TV. Next thing you know, Gang of Four will be used in a commercial (oh, wait...)

Remember the crappy '90s Beatles "reunion" song 'Free As A Bird"? I hadn't given it any thought until my local supermarket's muzak played it three times I've been in recently. Once, even twice, is a fluke, but what could possibly explain that song's resurrection?

Some Muzak programmer thought it'd fit in, and figured the brouhaha over its creepy, wrong-headed origin has faded by now. Either that, or he/she assumed few people really cared to begin with.

A few weeks ago, the morning show on one of the St. Louis tv channels used "Marquee Moon" as the transition to commercials music, and it happened to be on Tom Verlaine's birthday. So one of the StL channels has a fairly cool producer in their ranks.

I was quite dumbfounded to hear the Pink Floyd song "Fearless" in a restaurant yesterday. As a teen, I loved "Meddle," an album obscured, not by clouds, but by it's follow-up, "Dark Side." I much preferred 'Meddle'. I think I'm the only person in the world that loves "Fearless." Ever get the feeling that they're playing something just for you?

A friend of mine recently asked the question on Facebook, "What's your favorite Pink Floyd album?" Of the 20 or so people who responded, at least five liked Meddle the best. (Not me, BTW...I voted for Animals.)

As for "Free as a Bird," I too heard it recently at my local grocery chain and thought it an odd choice.

@MrFab You are not alone !!! Meddle is my favorite Pink Floyd album (or at least the one I am most likely to listen to at this point of my life) and Fearless is far and away my favorite Floyd song. I heard it while at the treadmill at the gym a couple weeks back and even though it is exactly opposite of a motivational exercise anthem, it kept my legs pumping.

"Fearless" is THE lost Floyd classic if you ask me. You rarely hear anyone talking it up, even when they're talking about Meddle.

Meddle was one of the first two Floyd albums I picked up when I finally started to question my whole "I hate Pink Floyd" belief in the late '90s, and it was "Fearless" (and "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" from Saucerful of Secrets, the other album I took a flyer on at the used store that day) that really convinced me that my supposed loathing of the band was just a stupid holdover of loathing the band's fans back in high school.

I loved Slowdive, and I could hear the entire template for Slowdive's sound in "Fearless," so I knew it was time to stop believing I hated Pink Floyd.

I seem to have uncovered a "Meddle"/"Fearless" mystery cult. Which is good, now I don't feel so weird. Indeed, I'll never walk alone. (Wonder what the other diners at the restaurant were I heard the song thought during the sampled soccer crowd chant section - 'did someone turn on ESPN or sumthin?'

Heard the Equals' "Baby Come Back" twice lately, in two different places. Most welcome, if pretty baffling - where did that one come from?

Was walking past a monitor in a store playing some movie promo, and "The Passenger" came on. Stopped me in my tracks. Didn't catch what movie or whatever it was, but nice to hear Iggy in a Target.

I heard New Order's "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" at the local grocery store this afternoon. The third single from an album (of the same name) that came out 8 years ago, topping out at around 50 on the US charts. At the grocery store...?

I had a real shock when I heard Bert Jansch playing in a Sprint commercial.

As for the Floyd, as someone who always loved the Syd Barrett edition and even much of what they did in the ensuing years (prior to Dark Side), and who had to seriously examine their entire oeuvre for a TP cover story, I gotta say they latterly recorded a lot of boring stuff. But there are some good things in there too.

I've always been partial to Saucerful, the live stuff on Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. And, yes, Meddle.

Publix is usually pretty good for some TP music...I haven't heard "Ant Music" in any other retail establishment.

i dunno if thats good R bad mrFab.
i been @the homedepot a lot lately. the muzak is so bad in that place; but it serves its purpose as my singnal to head for the checkout lane.
but you might be experiencing something altogether more sinster. you might be the product of a clever marketing gimmick. one that is designed to keep the peron in the store longer with good muzak.

scary to think the stunt might actually work.

thats great fab. i was in the supermarket and saw a beautiful girl wearing a clash t shirt. n front of me online. i started singing all lost in the supermarket and this woman became my wife.
CORRECTION this woman looked at me like i was a weirdo and turned her head away. the first story was a better one though

This stunt has worked on me. I've lingered far longer in Waterloo Records than I should just so I could listen to the music they're playing. Ended up spending more money as a result, too. Bastards.

Damn. Good point, Steve. I have to go back to that store today - better bring my ipod and crank up the headphones. Resist, resist!

Of course, this was a downtown L.A. store - Muzak programmers might, if you'll pardon the expression, 'target' certain stores with certain tunes. A store in Iowa might not play the Clash.
Still, to be grocery shoping as Mick Jones is singing 'I wasn't born so much as I fell out' is an odd feeling nonetheless.

publix supermarkets rule. i think they still still specialize in miamidolphins gear. but watchit super shoppers, they'll probably try & dump the old logo stuff soon

I heard "Live and Die," by the Avett Brothers at my local Publix grocery store the other day. I respect those guys and I listen to them because my cousin's an absolute freak for them, but I kinda don't get it. Nonetheless, the song I heard at Publix includes these lyrics:

That reminds me, we really need some cat litter!

I don't have a shirt story, but there was a girl who noticed the Fishbone sticker on my car and approached me based on that. She turned me on to Pavement. We went to Sugar's first show together. We went to a lot of shows together. She asked me to move to California with her. I declined. 20+ years later, I only think about her every other minute.

Has anyone on this board ever met someone with a cool band t-shirt, commented on it, and ended up hitting it off romantically with that person? How about getting someone's romantic interest and attention, thanks to the t-shirt you were wearing?

I was at a party at my brother's house, and one of the guests noticed my Black Flag t-shirt (with the My War cover art). She asked if I was into the Dead Kennedys too. Yes, we hit it off.

What did you expect; back in those days, she saw guys in Black Flag t-shirts every night. A guy at a Black Flag show would have to do a lot more oto stand out ... like wearing an Abba t-shirt.

No, scratch that. Kira saw guys getting beat up at Black Flag gigs every night, too.
