Re: Archers Of Loaf...extremely overrated

I can't be the only one who feels this way, what is it about them that people like? There are tons of other bands that should be justly recognized.
To name a few:

Dandelion
Rosa Mota
Basehead
Fulflej
Green Magnet School
Into Another
Kill Creek
Love Battery

It's your first post here and you are ripping Archers of Loaf out of the blue, Jesterday? Thats not a good way to make friends, at least with me! The difference is that Archers of Loaf wrote 4 or 5 of the greatest indie rock songs of the early 90s and had stunning guitar interplay. Those other bands did not. Does that clarify?

You're going to tell me that Icky Mettle, Vee Vee, All The Nation's Airports and The Speed Of Cattle are great? Please, I've heard those albums and was bored to tears by them! And anyway, good songs beat "guitar interplay" anyday, something the bands I've listed had in spades. The fact that you're on the Archers' dicks tells me you're probably friends w/some or all of them or you like "alternative" rock and the Archers are the one indie band you heard and liked.
I'm not saying these bands were the best, far from it. As far as I'm concerned, music taste is subjective. Everybody has their own favorites, obviously, these were just some of my faves...

Btw, I didn't join this forum to trade barbs w/people, i just wanted to know if anyone else liked these groups. Go unload your elitist, arrogant views somewhere else.

I felt the same way about the Archers when those records came out, but have changed my mind listening to them in the past couple of years. I'd argue that the Archers have both good songs AND good guitar interplay, which is what makes those albums hold up as well as they have.

As for your claim that you didn't join this forum in order to "trade barbs," it seems to me that's exactly why you joined. Nothing wrong with criticizing a popular choice (I do the same thing every time the name "Pavement" comes up), but immediately jumping to this conclusion:

just because Nosepail likes the Archers indicates to me that you're here to be deliberately antagonistic, not have any actual conversations. You certainly haven't spent enough time on the board to know that everybody here is well-versed in indie/alternative/whatever rock and aren't talking anybody up because they're on the artists' dicks.

Nothing wrong with playing the curmudgeon and going against the prevailing grain, but perhaps you should spend some time learning how to do that without being personally insulting about it. Try reading some of the other posts on the board. Nosepail's being good examples, in fact.

OK, if that's the case, why did I start another thread ASKING for suggestions from people about new bands/albums? And I did say music taste is subjective, is it not?

I saw that other thread after I posted and when I saw you mentioned Kyuss/Nebula and especially Quest For Fire, I thought, Hmm, this guy and I have some likes in common."

I've never heard of any band in that list other than Orange 9mm, though I can't comment on their music.

I won't argue the virtues of any of the acts in Jesterday's inaugural post, nor will I compare them to Archers. Just chiming in to welcome the newcomer.

Jester (can I call you that?), I'm familiar with about half the bands on your list. Meanwhile, I admit that I've just recently dug back and "discovered" Archers of Loaf, so I won't pass comment.

All of us on this board do tend to get protective of our favorites here, but seriously, you'll find very little arrogance here. And if we're elitist, it's only in the sense that we all seek out and value music of quality and distinction — the "elite" of music, if you will.

I happen to lurve me some Archers of Loaf in a massive, bad-ass fashion. I thought Vee Vee was killer and All The Nations Airports was top-notch as well. The earlier stuff (read: the debut CD) is a wee bit not-to-my-tastes, but I still own all their stuff. Even their odds and ends are great. How could you not like "Smokin' Pot In The Hot City" or "Telepathic Traffic?"

They had an awesome guitar sound, great vocals, excellent songwriting. What was there to not like? Vocals too hoarse? Not enough confessional, James Blunt-styled wussery? No block-rockin' beats?

Dept. of Caveats: Not that anyone asked, but I don't care for Crooked Fingers at all. As in "not at all."

Meanwhile, that debut CD by Basehead is a zonked-out classic. That's the only title I know by them/him. Picking it up for $0.50 in a cutout bin beats the crap out of listening to anything by 50 Cent.

That's funny - the Archers' debut is far and away my favorite of their albums.

I love that debut Basehead record as well - I've yet to hear anything like it. The followup Not in Kansas Anymore is really good, too. I haven't quite come around to the third album Faith yet, but I'll get there eventually.

One of my favorite things of all time is The Onion's "Our Dumb Century" book. Of all the running gags in that collection, the one involving periodic declarations of "Peace In The Middle East!" might be my favorite.
