I am spending a chilly night listening here in Boston to the brand new record by hip-hop act The Coup with the inauspicious title "Sorry To Bother You". This is a band I have loved for 15 years. Yeah, they are unfortunately know as the act that was scheduled to release an album on 9/11/2001 that showed the Twin Towers being blown up (It seems several bands have laid some kind of similar claim but this is the real one). They have never released an even mediocre album till now. They are always soulful, fun, and filled with great political lyrics. At first listen, this is one of the worst releases I have ever heard by an artist that I considered a major talent. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and give it some more listens - maybe I will hear something in this mess - but at first listen "P-U, WHAT A STINKER!" Its filled with kazoos, handclaps, group cheers, awful rock riffs, and other obnovious novelty sounds. I am really bummed. This is a record I really looked forward to getting to know.
