Trail of Dead

@Paganizer: Have you heard Lost Songs yet? From the couple articles I read about it this week, it sounds like a potential classic.

just got it today
nice packaging

they've been on a roll with great albums back-to-back

so far it sounds like more of the same

you know with prog it takes several listens

immediate impression: not as accessible as Tao or Century (and so not likely to win new fans) but not as impenetrable as Worlds or Madonna. Not sure what's up with the second disc - sounds the same?


new Titus Andronicus is their best

Ooh, I cant wait to hear it! The Trail of Dead, that is, not Titus Andronicus. My opinion on them is documented elsewhere on this board - they are loathsome.

I'm ashamed to say that, despite my Austin residency, I've never seen Trail of Dead play, even though I've heard most of their records. I hope to rectify that at Fun Fun Fun Fest next weekend.

My ex-wife worked with Conrad Keely at a university press 10-odd years ago. He quit when ToD started touring nationally.

Listened again today (Disc 2 - which is just a different track order and is segued together; not, as I originally suspected, a remix version). Of a piece with the last two, so, good. There's a metal track (Mountain Battle Song) that's odd - a cross between Rush and Amon Düül II.

Titus - a different direction than previously. Good.

Though I think they can be hit and miss, the live show can be religious.
Various Factors -
*have had different lineups
*sometimes get silly and trade instruments (probably way more pro now that they play larger venues)
*fervent fanbase
*can use cool arrangements live
*way more prog than punk (a level of mastery of their instruments)
*a band that in another era would have a big stage show but is currently more just cerebral based, e.g. loud, and very music focused (seems high-energy but not because of any flashy behavior or anything)
*has a fanbase that is part goth kids, part gallery types, part college kids

A ToD show is not like every other indie band that comes to town. People walk out drained.
