Is it just me, or are there a lot of repeat nominees this year? Maybe some of them will actually get in.

My predictions:

The Marvelettes (because the Hall loves classic girl groups from the Sixties)
Randy Newman (because critics love him, even though nobody's bought his records since the '80s)
Donna Summer (because the Hall can't resist a posthumous induction)
Chic (see above; at least two members of Chic are dead)
Public Enemy (if only because Springsteen gave them a shout-out during his speech to induct U2)

She/they are still more deserving than Heart (?!), Procol Harum, The Paul Buttersfield Blues Band (can anyone name even one song by them?) or The Marvelettes.

If Kraftwerk can finally make the list, then maybe Roxy Music, Devo or Husker Du aren't far behind..? (Maybe..?)

I once bought THE PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND after hearing the Pixies' cover of "Born In Chicago."
When I got the disc home I found there was a different album in the tray.
Back to the store it went.
Have yet to hear that band.

I say: Public Enemy and Kraftwek only. Rush? I dont know - I cant listen to them for 30 seconds anymore, but I guess they are important and historically significant. Randy? Love him, but he aint rock and roll. Not even close. Donna SUmmer? Fiine, if you must. The rest of those? No fucking way!

Problematic Question (for me anyway):

If Public Enemy and N.W.A. are eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ... does it follow that Deep Purple and/or Rush are eligible for the Hip Hop Hall of Fame? Is there even a Hip Hop Hall of Fame? It's only a matter of time if there isn't.

I've heard that Rush did at least record one song that contains a lame, prog-rock attempt at a rap ... but I guess the only way Deep Purple could claim to be worthy of consideration would be ... via sampling? In which case I guess Led Zep gets into the HHHOF based on "When The Levee Breaks" being sampled at least once?

It's a stylistic quandary in my opinion. It is the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame. Blues artists seem totally eligible ... but isn't it a stretch to say hip hop is rock and roll? I also think Kraftwerk is a stretch. Is Kraftwerk really to be considered rock and roll? Wouldn't a critic who referred to them as a rock and roll band be heckled? Would a hip hop act that got labeled as a "rock" act have a right to be affronted? Would they care? Should I? Is Jethro Tull still heavy metal?

I know it's a thorny question; and I hate to be exclusionary ... but seriously: Would Deep Purple be eligible for induction into the Hip Hop Hall of Fame or not?

Possible Solution: Change the name to The Pop Music Hall of Fame?

Even better: Burn the whole edifice down and forget about it.

Kay, it's a moot point by now, as there are so many non-rockers in the so-called Rock'n'Roll HOF: Laura Nyro, ABBA, Grandmaster Flash, Madonna...

I'm vaguely aware that there are numerous non-rock types in the R&RHOF. It's a mistake in my opinion. Be that as it may ...

I guess it just never occurred to me that the term ("rock and roll") had become so simultaneously all-inclusive and utterly meaningless.

So anyway ... my final question remains unanswered:

Does Deep Purple get to be in the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame or what?

Well, all of you making your lists of who you would vote in actually do get to vote this year.

Yeah, I read that. All the internet responses will get tabulated, and the top five winners will get presented as one ballot. Gosh, I feel so empowered.

On the other hand, if they did count every internet response, who knows where it could lead? Next year, Styx might get inducted. (If that ever happens, I'm liable to take a trip to Cleveland and torch the place myself.)

ALBERT KING-the fact that the KING died in '92 (he was 69) before he was inducted is a case of criminal neglect. but i gotta believe he aint got no ill feelings about gettin in now. i can see him flipping over a right handed cigar box w/strings and celebratin with us.

meters-i'm still trying to like the band via youtube, no vote.

PAUL BUTTERFIELD- this is one of the finest blue eyed blues rock bands (cir '65) i've ever heard. but i dont think the band were into psychedelics yet. ultimately, CANNED HEAT would soon come along and save the day.

marvelletes- i can still vote for phil spector and let God judge him.

KRAFTWERK- is my favourite electronic band of all time. eno or george martin are next. coincidentally, their both solo artists...

This entire thing gets more pointless every year. It's like voting for the Heisman trophy...it matters to fans of the recipient, and everyone else thinks it's a scam. Because it is a scam.

They still have some pretty good jam sessions now and then.

i say we camp out in OKC tonight folks, with some pretty dang good music.

Rush IS Cleveland.

But the only two I like are Kraftwerk and Meters.

Complaining about the RRHOF is like eating Burger King and then whining about health risks.

The only absolute musts I see in the nominee list are Albert King, Butterfield and Kraftwerk. What humongous influences as well as being compelling artists.

Most of the rest are arguable, although Rush (rhymes with Mush) and Heart (rhymes with Fart) are crap. (OK, I do like the VW commericial with the guy in his car at a stoplight miming to "Drive by Night.")

M.Johnson, if you feel like you have any affinity whatsoever for blues music by white boys get any/all of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, East-West and The Original Lost Elektra Sessions. But it ain't Pixies music at all.

Since nobody else has stood up for them I will for Procol Harum, the only one on the list I have many records by (nearly all of them), have listened to in living memory, and which in my mind vaguely qualifies as a rock 'n' roll band. I've got and enjoy Randy Newman records but he doesn't; Deep Purple probably qualifies but I've never bought or wanted to listen to any of their records, ditto Joanie. I have one Butterfield album that I remember being OK, but haven't heard this millennium.
