What Are You Listening To

What Are You Listening To

I've been enjoying the works of the two "Vegetable Men" of Rock, Syd Barrett and Roky Erickson, particularly the groups they respectively are most known for. True visionaries and talented artists, the broad range of their efforts were ironically fueled by the muses that eventually undermined them.

And since the Madcap turned 60 a little over a week ago, this is some sort of tribute to him.

Mostly still just listening to the Arctic Monkeys debut, and the new Strokes which is top notch except for a few overwrought clunkers on it....... Since there's about a foot of snow outside today I've been playing Nick Drake just because it goes nice with the scenery.....Note to self : play some Syd & Roky, it's been too long....

Lately been listening to a lot of:

The Godfathers - Birth, School, Work, Death

Manic Street Preachers - Holy Bible

Bay City Rollers (found one of their best of compilations for $2.99 a few weeks ago and thought I would have Saturday Night and Rock And Roll Love Letter at the very least)

Alex Chilton - Like Flies on Sherbet (still don't understand why that album gets so crucified critically)

Julian Cope - Peggy Suicide

The Strokes - First Impressions Of Earth (it's good but still trying to determine how good)

Scott Walker - Scott

Billy Idol - Devil's Playground (power and melody --- power and melody)

Nick Cave - The Boatman's Call

Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville (funny as I just killed this one as overrated)

Beck - Midnite Vultures

Linton Kwesi Johnson - Reggae Greats

I'm probably forgetting some.

I used to see the Dandy Warhols in clubs when they were coming up and have kept one eye on their career but have not paid a great deal of attention for the most part.
You know, I'm giving Odditorium another chance after feeling neutral about everything they did prior (although enjoying them live) and I'm impressed. Their best, for sure.

BJM - give me two or three representative tracks to revisit.

Watching the end of the Miami Heat-Detroit Pistons game .. but afterward I was going to check out the debut by Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos on Artemis Records - I grew up with a few of the band members in Indianapolis.

Forgot one:

The Hated - No More We Cry

Also, there was a rumor that this mid-80's punk/hardcore band from Annapolis, MD was going to have all their recordings re-issued on Troubleman Unlimited but I haven't seen or heard anything about it.

If anyone has ever heard of this band (I don't think TP has an entry for them) and has any info regarding such releases, please post. Thanks.

Arctic Monkeys - disregarded at 1st listen, better appreciated later but will probably get pretty dusty eventually
Art Brut- bang bang Rock & Roll : still growing on me
Auntie Christ : I just discovered this one! (wtf?)
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit : Not a fan of the Sad Bastard. The only release that stuck with me was Lazy Line Painter Jane EP. But this one might be a keeper. We'll see.
Big Star : having a phase this week
Built to Spill : this new LP sounds great (granted it's a single plus demo-leaks with watermarks so far). Love 'em live but I forgot how a new LP would be a good thing.
Kate Bush : Glad she made Aerial but much of it is a complete yawn. Giving it another chance, though.
Captain Beefheart : from talks on this board
Flaming Lips - Zaireeka. Having a Zaireeka party soon.
GO Team - Thunder, Lightning Strike. Like this one despite myself
Rosebuds - Birds Make Good neighbors. One of the best of the past year. Can't get enough.
Serena-Maneesh. Still getting better
Django Reinhardt. Makes me plug in every pedal and play shoegaze (for some reason).
Tom Verlaine - Flash Light. Reviewing
Sonic Youth - syr6. Each SYR release gets a perfunctory listen.
Whysall Lane. This surprises me. Versus fans need to be alerted.
Kraftverk - Trans-Europe Express. Put this in to see if it's commonly overrated. Several tracks are pretty good - particularly pre-Ultravox. Overall, it's OK; as are all Kraftverk. It was dusty, mind you.

Oh. And this all goes great with the inspiring Olympics on the telly.

I finally saw the movie Dig! For whatever reason, it is really sticking with me and I am diving head-first into this stuff.

I used to see the Dandy Warhols in clubs when they were coming up and have kept one eye on their career but have not paid a great deal of attention for the most part. I am enjoying going back to their stuff and giving it another look.

I never heard a Brian Jonestown Massacre song until I saw the movie (although I loved the name and logo when I first saw it years ago). I have bought some of their stuff but do not really know where to start.

Any BJM fans out there? What are the essential recordings that would get me fired up about the band?

mental illness
are good places to start

my friends (all 2 of them but jim bob won't return calls, so that number fluctuates daily) hate them for their blatant and unimaginative stonesiness

but that doesn't bother me at all...

dandy seems to be good songs here and good songs there...

speaking of Rock movies just rented the CAPTIVATING Nomi Song

a. i saw him in ohio
b. my (old!) friends helped
c. it's real good (and REAL sad)
4. TP's IR gets thanked--Why??? Who??? What did you know and when????

One Kiss Leads to Another box
Roland Kirk - Rip, Rig and Panic

For some reason, they were never big here in the states
reason like maybe the time that Mark E. was heading across the desert west for the next gig, commented about how big the desert was going to be and turned around and went home.
...or the time he fired (part of?) his band while starting a tour here
....or the time he delivered the show from off stage (Boston, was it?)
...or the time he argued with bandmembers in lieu of singing (NYC, was it?)
...or the time he had the audience sing for him (can't remember where, but considering he won't play the south, entire rockies time zone or most of the midwest...)
....or any other of the famous "getting heard in America" stories

Then, there's the relative indifference toward American labels/distribution.

Not that I blame him for any of these unfounded rumours.
