Ol' Gary had other album covers even worse than those two, but the quality of the albums matched the quality of the covers on those. But I think Pleasure Principal and Telekon were both pretty great.

And heck, when Robert Palmer wanted to be Numan, he went all in and also had a rather good album graced with a crappy cover:



I never have been able to figure out the thought process behind that cover. "Well, how about we put a photo of Robert standing in water listening to a Walkman? That's a grabber!"

And of course, there's this horror, which I had a description of that I liked on another post but am too lazy to look up:

I've always thought the biggest problem with the Tim cover was that it was a horrendous mismatch with the album. Slap that thing on an R.E.M. album or some other more artsy-fartsy bunch and no one would've blinked on eye. But hiring Robert Longo to do a Replacements album cover was sort of like casting John Goodman as James Bond.

Though I would actually like to see that, now that I think of it.

Husker Du had some really atrocious album covers.

That last one was a tad ... "drekkish."


There's a version of Kilimanjaro by The Teardrop Explodes that was

abysmal.

It isn't a great album anyway. Cope's initial flurry of solo stuff kills the Teardrops dead in the water.

I always hated the album cover for Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub.

However, since that band never mattered much to me, it hasn't caused me to feel personally affronted.

I dislike the cover to the last Chameleons UK album ...

... but love it because the entire band signed my copy.

Album covers matter less and less. From LP to CD to MP3. They're almost an afterthought, aren't they?

Looking back, maybe Tim wasn't so bad after all?

I like the covers for Tim and Warehouse, personally. Agreed on the Chameleons cover, though - I'd forgotten about that one. Maybe the awfulness of the cover is why I never pull that off the shelves - I remember it being a pretty good record.

Agree on the Replacements and Chameleons covers. But, for my money -- $7.99 at the time, to be exact -- His Royal Badness takes the prize.



Dirty Mind is a brilliant synthesis of pop, rock & roll, New Wave, soul and funk, in the service of some ace songs, and of course, all topped by Prince's excellent falsetto. It probably would've broken Prince to a wider audience, had it not been for this embarrassing, off-putting cover.

Come to think of it, Prince has more than his share of crappy covers in his catalog, including quite a few wrapped around excellent albums -- 1999, Lovesexy, Emancipation and Planet Earth come immediately to mind. Purple Rain is like an aberration among his album covers; I guess Warner Brothers knew the album would be a hot seller, and insisted that Prince shouldn't sabotage it with a duff cover. (Perhaps that ass-ugly poster that came with the album was a concession.)

Everything about this cover screams "low budget" and to be honest, it even sounds that way at times. The songs, though, are for the most part excellent.

Here's one of my favorite bad covers...I can't comment on the music as I've never heard it. Below is a review from progreviews.com, where I learned of this album's existence a few years ago.



"Never let it be said that we don't strive to be comprehensive on this site. Anyway, I know that if you're like me and were raised all proper-like, then you were told that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Well, for any covers you run across involving "Sumo All Star" cut-off sweatshirts: judge away, and with extreme prejudice at that. Rutherford's debut solo album, Smallcreep's Day, was actually a pretty decent prog-based effort in the style of late 70s Genesis. But merely three years down the road with this, one only senses a piss-poor and misguided attempt to emulate the recent pop success found by colleague Phil Collins. It's got that dinky, inoffensive, early-mid 80s Genesis pop sound that makes me instinctively bare my fangs. When he hits those high notes, Rutherford (the worst vocalist of Genesis' members past or present, nolo contendere) merely succeeds at approximating Collins' most abrasive singing. Highly sought after, but if you are in any doubt whatsoever: beware. This CD is a painful and pitiful listen, and I can state without flinching that I like not a single song on it. Features Stewart Copeland, obviously slummin' it in between albums with The Police."

According to Wikipedia, it could have been even more awful:

"In an interview with That Metal Show in 2011, Axl stated his original idea for the cover art was to be the photo of the Space Shuttle Challenger exploding, which was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1986, but Geffen refused it saying it was "in bad taste""

All in all, I am thankful for the cover act they actually ended up with.

That Robert Williams painting, by the way, was originally the cover. My vinyl copy of Appetite had that cover. I think the cross/skulls cover is far superior, though.

MY interpretation lies at the cross-section of these.


On a serious note: Do you think GnR were trying to establish some kind of Grateful Dead-like iconography for themselves early on--ie, illustrative stuff that would become indelibly associated with them? It WAS a different world in the late 1980s. . .

That G'n'R artwork is by my man Robert Williams, one of the fathers of "low brow" art, sticking it to the Beverly Hills wine-and-cheese white-cube-art gallery scene. The id with the lid off - as funny, rauchy and exciting as any punk rock. Very influential here in LA (home of G'n'R of course), but, I imagine, elsewhere as well by now.

Okay, I'll bite and admit to liking Husker Du's covers. Too bad Grant "Fake Name Graphx" Hart got too distracted to continue doing artwork for other artists, aside from the Replacements' "Hootenanny". (Granted, the covers for his solo albums ain't that great, but I don't know if he did the artwork for them).

There's a David Sedaris story that leaps to mind. You know the one where his sister Amy tells the makeup artist to make her look like she's just had the shit beat out of her?

When I first saw the album, it looked like Mick was being suffocated. I continue to fall back to that initial take in spite of myself.

I heard they were "updating" the iconic lips and tongue. After seeing what they came up with, they should've left well enough alone.

Lyrically- To some people maybe. It has:
Dancing with Mr D (dancing with the devil/death)
Doo Doo Doo (topical, anti-police)
Starfucker (The label refused to print the title, renaming it Star-Star)

Musically-
This is the album with Billy Preston in the band and his clavinet dominates (by Stones standards) the arrangements and he injected a funk streak throughout. Taylor used lots of wah. Wyman's not on this one - he didn't want to do funk bass or something IIRC. Nicky Hopkins was also the arranger on several tracks. It's a single-place-in-time experiment and yielded some of my faves.

But what I really loved as a kid was subjecting rube kids to the rejected cover/gatefold center:

I doubt that. The 'do on the woman on the left would be ludicrous no matter who it's on. It looks too big for her head, like it was taken from a photo of a bigger head and pasted on later. Ditto the woman on the right.

Looking at that album cover again a few times -- because I can only look at it for a couple seconds without laughing out loud -- I'd almost swear that The Faith Tones are three guys in drag. In fact, the one on the right looks like my tenth-grade history teacher with a wig.

Why the ten year gap?

+Did she not go to a show for 10 years?

+Did she just not enjoy any interim shows?

+Did she forget the project for a decade?

+Was Green Day's level of performance unassailable, assumed an irrevocable denouement...until, unexpectedly, the fortuitous Nickelback show realigned the objective of the blank slate?

+Was live music merely a random night out, of no particular avocation until the Nickelback revelation?

+One of these things is not like the other (and possibly infected)

+Is Jesus a latino boyfriend or do these artists collectively reference a xtian ideal or tenet worthy of linked ink?

+Is there a special significance to the rainbow fish?

I guess when you've had "Stefani" misspelled on your body once, it would be foolish to have it spelled correctly the second time and really call attention to it.

1. Never get a tattoo when you're under the influence.
2. Never get a tattoo when you're on vacation.
3. Never get a tattoo from an artist who isn't 100 percent fluent in your language.

Oh, and 4: Check out the tattoo artist's own tattoos, and the decor in his/her work space. (My brother invited me to come along when he got one of his tattoos. The artist's space was decorated with memorabilia from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and other such movies. His personal ink was along the same lines: lots of ghoulish guys holding bloody axes and hammers and such. Man, I wouldn't have let that guy near me with a Crayola, let alone a tattooing needle.)
