John Foxx & Gary Numan both posted about this this morning, so it sounds like something a few people around here would be interested in:

How ...

... exciting?

One of my friends and I have been going back and forth pranking one another on a semi-regular basis over the past couple of decades. I think it all started with one of us getting tampon samples sent to the other one...your average, typical stupidity.

A few months back, my friend managed to hijack my email account* and he sent a lengthy, fawning missive to Clive Jackson, also known as "The Doctor" of Doctor and the Medics semi-fame. He spun this crazy story about me planning to open a psychedelic/glam rock club in the former 688 space (which is now a kidney dialysis facility or something, but that didn't come up) and wanting to negotiate with Doctor (and the Medics, if possible) to play our grand opening. Things devolved rather quickly from there.

I'm not sure what any of this has to do with that new magazine, but after glancing at the articles on the website, it just popped into my pointy little head...

*He claims it's real simple to do, but he does internet security for the CDC (all his work emails include the tagline "Protecting the Science," which is cool...BTW, I have another friend who is a Dr. for the CDC and also under the command of the Surgeon General, and she gets to wear a Naval officer-style suit for official functions) so he's probably spying on me this very second...oh, I should add that this guy's a big-time Libertarian, too. Go figure.

Yeah, you can thank most ISPs/email providers for that. It's usually easiest to simply take advantage of the provider's lost password recovery features and perhaps use a bit of social engineering. This is one way a lot of private investigators, hackers and other shadowy sorts do it.
