the san diego padres totally suck

unfortunately, kathleen (thats right, our own tp fan club prez), traveled all the way there to witness it. she is there on summer convention time, so in fairness, the tiickets were free.
but try as she might to cover her eyes, it was so bad she couldn't look away. as kathleen put it via an old fashioned tele, "it was embarrassing, they left the bases loaded in the seventh inning and ended up with only four hits'. thats right, the pudres were shutout not only before the home faithful, but a tp faithful as well. pathetic indeed.

san diego might have a lot of good things going for it (the weather, the surf, beautiful girls-but they're found everywhere- the scenery & Nile) but if that baseball team can't change its religion, maybe they should try changing their uniforms again, before they're hanged by their own robe ties.

There is absolutely no doubt that the Padres are pathetic. I've never been a fan of the team. The Padres are essentially a farm team peddled as a professional franchise to a demoralized fan base with low expectations and many alternative entertainment options. Any time a Padres player shows sufficient talent they are usually sold off to a better, wealthier franchise and the profits pocketed by the owners without significant team enrichment. Add to that the fact that the team is currently for sale and the current owners have little time, inclination or incentive to spend money on the team.

Ultimately, the Padres performance has nothing to do with the "religion" of the team. It has everything to do with the ultimate intentions of the owners.

The team is maddening in how it can run hot and cold. Last night the Padres were playing the Giants in S.F. My good friend Terry was at the game. He said:
Quote

The Pads got beat like a pinata until Jujubes flew out of their asses, but otherwise it was OK. Final score 7-1 (4-0 after the 1st inning)[...]
and later, talking about the pitching:
Quote

Watching Richards was painful. You could see his ERA ballooning up on the scoreboard with every wretched inning. Dude came into the game at 7-10 with a 4.03 ERA (yep, he was already averaging coughing up over 4 runs a game BEFORE tonight's debacle), and it got uglier fast.
And finally, when I remarked that the team could further benefit from players who could field, he said:
Quote

Yeah. The dude at 2nd made a botch that set up the three-run homer. Grrrr....
And all this coming from a FAN of the team: He wears a Padres cap at AT&T Park. But ultimately, the team stats says it all:

Update: A group headed by former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley and including pro golfer Phil Mickelson reached agreement Monday to buy the San Diego Padres from John Moores. The purchase price is believed to be around $800 million.

Link to AP article: Padres sale agreement in place, needs MLB approval

The team salaries are low, the current owner hasn't done much with the team, and the guys buying the team probably won't have the cash to improve it. I don't expect to see significant improvement in the team in the foreseeable future. Same as it ever was.

California does NOT warrant 3 national league teams.

...PLUS 2 American League teams...

Look, CA produces 13% of U.S. G.D.P. and if the states of the U.S. were compared with other countries CA would represent the 8th largest economy in the world. That can buy a lot of baseball.

If you want to ask questions, how about explaining why California needs both the S.F. Giants and the Oakland Athletics when their home fields are precisely 10.5 miles apart?

I suspect a SoCal bias here, Nile; please recuse yourself from the panel!

I have no problem with this, being a New York State resident (though New England native). How far apart is Queens and the Bronx? 20-30 miles?

Silly boy! I lived in NorCal (Oakland) for 13.5 of the last 18 years. I've been to more Athletics and Giants home games than Padres games. The day the Giants beat the Rangers to win the 2010 World Series I was in the crowd at San Francisco Civic Center Plaza watching the game on a Jumbotron, cheering for the Giants.

OK then, so we all agree that the Padres "totally suck" and must go, right?

And I hope they take that monk mascot with them (creepy, right???). Before Wally the Green Monster gives him a Boston-style beatdown.

maybe i should have stuck to that 'no baseball' decree some wise tper suggested awhile back. but no matter though, this sorta thing happens about this time of year, every year around here.

btw, Seattle Mariner pitcher, Felix Hernandez no-hit the .233 pathetic team batting average Tampa Bay Rays today.
